1 What s inside: Natural Futures update 1 Volunteering News 2 New opportunities 3 Wildlife in close-up 4 Regular opportunities 6 Volunteering newsletter Natural Futures Project Update For those of you who are new to the Volunteer Newsletter, you might be interested to know that the Trust has submitted an exciting bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to develop the range and numbers of people who volunteer with us. Jane and May have finished the work for the Natural Futures Project and the bid has now been completed and submitted, we will hear whether this has been successful or not in March Unfortunately this means that we have had to say goodbye to Jane and May - although we will be keeping in touch with them and updating them when we have any news. It s been lovely to work with them and we will all miss them. They are both inspirational people to work with; full of enthusiasm and great ideas. The bid they ve written is really exciting and we hope that it s successful so that we can go ahead with all the projects outlined in their plan. Thank you to everyone who came to have a look at the bid at Wigg island on the 3rd December. It was lovely to see you and to have a chat with you. We hope you enjoyed the evening too. The Natural Futures funding will help the Trust work for the next four years throughout Cheshire and particularly in the northern parts of the region - where so far we have not had such a big presence. The project aims to help connect people with Cheshire s natural heritage and wildlife. So our Natural Futures Programme will help local people to use our reserves and wildlife sites through vibrant events and bush craft / forest school activities for all ages. We will help people to value local wildlife through a network of in-school wildlife clubs, nature discovery walks, and basic surveying training. We will help people to take action for local wildlife through, for example: 4 new fortnightly volunteer groups, access to a great annual volunteer training programme, and we will run an annual programme to train excluded young people in conservation skills and practices. We re excited by this project in the new directions it takes the Trust and what benefits it could bring to communities and wildlife. We look forward to sharing the bid with you.

There was a big bonfire, jacket potatoes, mince pies and even a little festive spirit! If you d like to come out with us too, please feel free to come along to any of the work days after in the New Year. These will be on the first Tuesday of the month or the third Saturday, and would be a great way for you to get to know what the project is all about. 3 Volunteering news Local Wildlife Site surveys Dr Rachel Giles says thank you to all the volunteers who undertook the Local Wildlife Site surveys this year. In 2013 our priority was to survey sites which are under threat from development. Our volunteers kindly gave up their time to survey sites along the route of the proposed HS2 line and several sites that are threatened by new developments such as road or house building schemes. The Cheshire is consulted on all major developments, so having up to date information is vital if we are to provide an accurate and balanced response to the consultations. In total we surveyed 27 existing sites in 2013 and a further 9 potential new sites were assessed. We will be contacting all the land owners in due course to pass on the survey information and to provide conservation management recommendations where appropriate. We are always on the lookout for more volunteers to help out with surveys and we are particularly short of people with botanical skills. If you have any species identification skills or habitat survey experience and think you could help next year please contact Rachel on rgiles@cheshirewt.org.uk New opportunities Local Nature Supporters Our fundraising department is looking for you if you are someone who is chatty, approachable and confident. You will be coming out with us to events and to meet and talk to the public. We need your help to inspire new people to join Cheshire and support the work that we all do. Tea, coffee and cakes provided! If you feel you would like to help promote Cheshire and be part of an excellent, fun team have a look at the People Engagement and Fundraiser advert on our volunteering webpage. Please call Austin, our Marketing and Membership Officer, on or him at amorley@cheshirewt.org.uk
4 New opportunities Want to volunteer in a nice warm friendly place over the winter? Our lovely membership office is filled with a happy cake-eating bunch, but we need more of them (volunteers I mean, although cakes do go down very well too)! As our conservation work grows we need more help making sure that our members get the right amount of news from us. We send out membership packs, newsletters and other membership information. There is office work and computer work as well as helping members on the phone. Full training is provided so you can learn new skills as you volunteer. Can you help us? It makes a change from being out in the cold and wet winter weather! If you would like to come and join us at Bickley Hall Farm and be a membership volunteer please call Ruth on or her at rrichardson@cheshirewt.org.uk Delamere Mossland Project Thank you to all of the volunteers who took part in practical habitat management in and around the Delamere Forest. Your help with this project is making a real difference to what we are trying to achieve in this area. If you want to come and join our hard-working group there is a Tuesday volunteer group (the first Tuesday of the month and a Saturday volunteer group (the third Saturday of the month). A week before each session I will send out an detailing where we will meet (it won t always be in the same place), what time to meet, and what to bring. Please back each time to confirm if you are coming (this way we won t leave the meeting point before you have arrived) - there is no need to reply if you aren t coming. Contact Katie, Delamere Mossland Officer, on mobile: or at kpiercy@cheshirewt.org.uk

The 200 acre working farm is important overwintering land for our 300 strong herd of Longhorn cattle. Whilst we are managing the land in a productive way to feed our livestock we are ever mindful of the wildlife the farm supports. We are now developing a volunteer group to assist in delivering a variety of agricultural and conservation based tasks that will help ensure the farm remains a flagship for sustainable agriculture in Cheshire. The group will meet on the last Thursday of every month between 10:00am and 4:00pm depending on the activity. Volunteers need to bring suitable outdoor clothing and some lunch. Joe will provide the brew! For more information please contact Joe at jpimblett@cheshirewt.org.uk
