Our diverse teams work with individuals, families and communities to reduce drug use, improve mental health and reconnect people to their family and the community. Goulburn Valley Alcohol and Drug Services This position sits within the consortium of Goulburn Valley Health (Lead), SalvoCare Northern Victoria and Odyssey House Victoria offering counselling, care and recovery and non-residential withdrawal services for people who reside in the Goulburn Valley and Lower Hume Regions The position is responsible for service delivery across a range of areas as directed by the AOD Clinical Coordinator and the Manger People and Program Development. The role requires travel across the Goulburn Valley and Lower Hume Regions. Position Objective The AOD Clinician: Assessment, Care & Recovery and Counselling works in coordination with all AOD service streams and with related sectors, to facilitate seamless and integrated treatment pathways for clients. The AOD Clinician plays a critical role in clients transitions through the AOD service phases, from intake and assessment through to engagement with treatment and longer term recovery services, working closely with internal and external service providers to ensure a smooth transition and assist clients to remain on their treatment plan. 2 The AOD Clinician works with complex clients to develop holistic, long term recovery plans focusing on recovery from problematic substance abuse and promoting health and wellbeing and social connectedness, achieving outcomes that will sustain positive and ongoing behaviour change. The AOD Clinician reduces AOD-related harms to individuals and their families by providing a range of counselling interventions to assist clients and their family members to change harmful behaviours and increase their capacity to effectively manage the difficulties they are experiencing that are associated with problematic AOD use and that promote recovery. Ultimately this role will assist in the provision of skills to prevent relapse and support the acquisition of knowledge, skills and motivation to initiate and maintain change and improve quality of life. Role Responsibilities: Assessment Provide high quality engagement, assessment and support services to individuals and their families, via holistic assessment, appropriate referral and evidence-based, brief interventions using best practice principles including Family Inclusive and Dual Diagnosis practices; Conduct comprehensive assessments including: o Ascertaining information on substance abuse, history, mental health and risk; o Determining if a client requires a standard or complex treatment response; o Utilising the mandated AOD assessment tool; o Arranging further assessments and secondary consults if required; o Presenting assessments at daily clinical review, making recommendations on risk, priority and treatment plans. Contribute effectively to clinical review. Care & Recovery Provide pre-care support for clients until their engagement with services commences. Case manage complex clients, facilitate, coordinate and support clients throughout the life cycle of their treatment plan. Provide high quality pre and post care coordination services to clients and their families, using best practice principles including Family Inclusive Practice and Dual Diagnosis Principles. Provide flexible coordination and support and targeted interventions to clients and family members, to enhance the client s engagement and retention in treatment and facilitate reentry for clients who have disengaged or relapsed following treatment. These interventions may include: o Providing practical assistance, such as transport to key appointments and facilitating access to relevant services o Opportunistic motivational interviewing and supportive counselling with the aim of retaining clients in treatment o Provision of harm reduction information and education o Coordination of and contribution to case conferences to facilitate integrated and consistent treatment across services. Facilitate client access to a range of appropriate treatment options and service providers, both internally and externally, to address their AOD use and meet long term recovery goals. Develop individual long term recovery plans by assisting clients to identify achievable and AOD Clinician Assessment, Care & Recovery and Counselling Page 2 of 5

3 relevant goals. Utilise the Drug & Alcohol Outcome Star and/or other outcome measure to identify goals, track and monitor progress across a range of recovery domains and provide clients with tangible evidence of the effectiveness of their treatments. Work with clients and their families to develop holistic discharge plans that support meaningful social and economic participation and other practical aspects of recovery. Provide post care support including assisting clients and their families to negotiate their treatment journey beyond the AOD sector as required. Counselling Develop treatment plans and provide effective counselling interventions to meet the individual needs of clients and their families, including those with complex needs. These interventions may include: o Assisting clients to identify their substance use triggers and high risk situations o Assisting clients to develop practical skills such as problem-solving, goal-setting and assertive communication o Assisting clients to develop insight into their thinking and behaviour in order to help them make and sustain positive changes o Assisting clients to understand the relationship between their substance use and other areas of their lives, such as mental and physical health, relationships and lifestyles o Assisting clients to access a range of community services and supports to promote recovery. Contribute effectively to clinical review. Provide information, education and practical assistance to clients to help them to reduce the harms of their substance use to themselves and those around them. Provide clients with exit and post treatment support plans to offer them appropriate support to maintain treatment gains. Provide assertive referrals e.g. financial counselling/literacy, nutrition and life skills training and other health initiatives to support client recovery where needed. Build strong and effective relationships with clients and their families, creating positive expectations and confidence in treatment. Follow up standard clients at 3 and 12 months post treatment to track progress of recovery and support re-engagement with AOD treatment services or other supports, where appropriate. Source and facilitate access to support networks, aftercare and self-help groups and community activities, and assist clients to build these networks. Provide and facilitate a range of support and intervention programs for families and carers, including engaging them in individual AOD treatment. Consider the needs of and identify any risks to vulnerable children, working with families to develop safety plans and facilitating referrals to partner Child FIRST and Family service agents when indicated. 4 Professional liaison and consultation Co-ordinate with Care and Recovery and Clinical Review processes to support seamless transitions between service types and a consistent approach to supporting the achievement of clients recovery goals. Liaise and consult with other services to develop and support the provision of recovery and harm reduction orientated treatment that aligns with the client s individual treatment plan. In consultation with clinical review processes and other engaged services, provide support and ongoing review of individual treatment plans. Establish and maintain collaborative and productive working relationships with current and potential stakeholders and partners, both internally and externally. Supervision and professional development Actively participate in ongoing professional development via the annual performance reviews, individual and group supervision and by attending relevant training as required. Support the student placement program and supervise students as requested. Administration Maintain up-to-date progress notes, case files and data entry in a confidential and professional manner. Actively participate in the revision and development of policies, clinical guidelines and treatment programs. Adhere to relevant site-specific policies and procedures. Contribute to the achievement of continuous quality improvement, both in terms of individual and program performance by encouraging an environment where high quality work is achieved and supported by the adherence to/development of quality systems documentation. Adhere to and keep informed of relevant legislative compliance requirements, and report any perceived breaches, risks, hazards, incidents and complaints to line Manager or other appropriate person. Undertake other duties as directed by the supervisor and Catchment Manager. Key Selection Criteria 1. Relevant health and or welfare Tertiary Qualification e.g. in Social Work, Psychology, Nursing or Allied Health Sciences or working towards completion of relevant qualification. 2. Certificate IV in AOD or have completed the required competencies (or able to complete within the first 12 months of employment). 3. Proven skills in the application of assessment, case coordination, case management, case formulation, development of Individual Treatment Plans and discharge planning. 4. Experience in working with AOD and dual diagnosis clients and other categories of complex clients. 5. Ability to collaborate effectively with a range of people (including specific groups such as Aboriginal, CALD and Forensic clients) and families experiencing problematic alcohol and other drugs use in a respectful and compassionate manner. 6. Proven ability to develop and collaborate effectively with service providers and AOD Clinician Assessment, Care & Recovery and Counselling Page 4 of 5

5 stakeholders. 7. A demonstrated commitment to teamwork and the ability to take appropriate individual and team responsibility for the welfare of clients. 8. Highly developed communication and conflict resolution skills. 9. Proven reporting writing skills. 10. Capacity to maintain file records and data collection processes to a high professional standard. Essential Requirements Satisfactory outcome of a confidential Police Check and Working with Children Check. OHV is committed to child safety and is a child safe organisation. Certificate IV Alcohol & Other Drugs, or willingness to complete Empathy for those whose lives have been affected by problematic alcohol and other drug use/ and or mental health disorders. Possession of a current Victorian Driver s License. Information technology skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office suite. Eligibility to work in Australia. Desirable Requirements Relevant Health, Social or Welfare related qualification and experience Specialist knowledge in one or more relevant areas such as Family Therapy, Mental Health, Family Violence, Trauma, etc. First Aid Certificate. Current knowledge of OH&S practices. *Appendix A AOD Competencies OHV requires people in clinical positions to have the following competencies (or their equivalent). Where people do not already have these competencies OHV will invest in the person s professional development by providing them through its RTO. The timeframe for completion of the minimum competencies is to be agreed between the manager and employee. The competencies required are: CHCAOD001 - Work in an alcohol and other drugs context CHCAOD002 - Work with intoxicated clients CHCAOD004 - Assess needs of clients with alcohol and other drugs issues CHCAOD006 - Provide interventions for people with alcohol and other drugs issues CHCAOD007 - Develop strategies for AOD relapse prevention CHCAOD009 - Develop and review individual alcohol and other drugs treatment plans I have read and understand the requirements of my position.
