Carol s thoughts I m not a founding member but involved for almost 30 years will share some of my first memories of SEPI as well as some thoughts on the future
If ever have a SEPI conference in Los Angeles, I think I know where we should have the Saturday night gala dinner J SEPI s is kind of a divey sports bar with beer and giant subs across the street from UCLA

Here s a copy of the very first SEPI newsletter from back in September 1983 Vol. 1 No. 1

SEPI NEWSLETTER Our friend the bear is saying: Greetings. You may be wondering What is this newsletter I m holding in my hands and what is this SEPI thing all about? The Organizing Committee met in June 1983 to review results from an initial questionnaire (from Fall 1982): Lee Birk George Stricker Marvin Goldfried Paul Wachtel Jeanne Phillips Barry Wolfe
* Should there be a Journal? 65% yes - - to help fight fragmentation in our field; encourage articles about integrative issues; as vehicle for therapists interested in integration to create an identity and make this effort visible * Should there be an Organization? 72% yes Now s the time! * And the name? Society of Straight- Thinking and Nice Clinicians Society for Mutual Understanding Among Therapists (SMUT) I ve always liked the name Geoffrey But they decided to go with SEPI!

But what about the future of psychotherapy integration?

* Integrative and eclectic approaches continue to be extremely popular * However, the most recent APA clinical psychologist survey by Norcross & Karpiak (2012) in 2010 [Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice] found eclectic/ integrative bumped from first to second place (22%) for the first time in 6 decades of similar surveys. * Cognitive orientation (31%) was endorsed by the most clinical psychologists.
Norcross & Karpiak (2012) survey primary theoretical orientations of APA clinical psychologists ORIENTATION Behavioral 8% 10% 14% 16% 13% 10% 15% Cognitive Eclectic/ Integrative Humanistic Rogerian Psychodynamic Systems
Psychotherapy Integration in the next decade * A recent Delphi poll on the future of psychotherapy was conducted by Norcross, Pfund, and Prochaska (2013) [Professional Psychology: Research and Practice]. * An expert panel of 62 mental health professionals completed an online questionnaire to predict the probability what they thought would happen during the next 10 years, using a scale from 1 = great decrease to 7 = great increase. * One set of questions asked about the likelihood of 31 different psychotherapy orientations being used over the next decade. The next slide presents the top 10.
Norcross, Pfund, & Prochaska (2013) Delphi Poll : Predicted changes in theoretical orientations over next decade 1 = great decrease, 4 = remain the same, 7 = great increase. Mindfulness Therapies 5.55 Cognitive- Behavior Therapy 5.48 Integrative Therapy 5.23 Multicultural Therapies 5.20 Motivational Interviewing 5.15 Dialectical Behavior Therapy 5.13 Eclectic Therapy 4.85 Exposure Therapies 4.85 Interpersonal Therapy 4.81 Cognitive Therapy 4.79
Psychotherapy Integration in the next decade * In many ways the explosion of interest in mindfulness therapies over the past 10 years represents a success for psychotherapy integration! * Over 15 years ago, Jeffery Martin published an article in the Journal of Psychotherapy Integration (1997) that proposed mindfulness as a common factor in psychotherapy. * He argued that mindfulness is a core psychotherapy process that is employed collaboratively by patients and therapists from all orientations to psychotherapy.
Psychotherapy Integration in the next decade * Just recently, Diane Arnkoff and I, along with five of our graduate students at CUA, wrote a short paper exploring how mindfulness and acceptance- based interventions have been integrated into different approaches to therapy. * We suggested that aspects of mindfulness may share common factors with the theories and methods of different theoretical orientations, including psychodynamic, experiential, family systems, and CBT.
What Psychotherapy Integration might look like in the next decade * Norcross, Pfund, and Prochaska (2013) also asked what types of therapeutic interventions were predicted to increase or decrease over the next decade. * Those that were most predicted to increase were technologically driven online self- help therapies, smartphone applications, self- help resources (beyond books), virtual reality, and social networking interventions. * If therapy is offered more by phone and online, what are the implications for PI?
Norcross, Pfund, & Prochaska (2013) Predicted changes in types of therapeutic interventions over the next decade 1 = great decrease, 4 = remain the same, 7 = great increase. Online self- help therapies 6.08 Smartphone applications 5.95 Recommendation of self- help resources 5.36 (beyond books) Use of virtual reality 5.33 Social networking interventions 5.32
Q: What might Psychotherapy Integration look like in the next decade? A: Let s talk about it next year at the SEPI conference in Baltimore!
