3 There is lots of support available for breastfeeding mothers in Ayrshire. When you are at home with your newborn You can speak to your community midwife either when she is visiting, or by calling her on the number on the front of your hand-held notes. Out-of-hours (after 5pm and before 9am) call Ayrshire Maternity Unit (AMU) on For additional or specialist support with challenging issues, your midwife can refer you to the infant feeding team at AMU. For general telephone support, you can call the national breastfeeding helpline on or visit their website at 3

4 When you have been transferred to the care of your health visitor You can speak to your health visitor either when they are visiting, or by calling their number which is in your parent-held record (the red book). For additional or specialist support with challenging issues, your health visitor can refer you to the community infant feeding nurse who is a specialist health visitor. 4

5 Other sources of information The Breastfeeding Network (BfN) is a UK-wide registered charity which offers an independent source of support and information for breastfeeding women and their families. They provide breastfeeding support in the wards in AMU and provide drop-in centres throughout Ayrshire. You can find out more from the leaflet in your postnatal information pack or at their website: Breastfeed Happily Here is an NHS Ayrshire & Arran scheme promoted by the BfN. The aim of the scheme is to support breastfeeding mums in public. Ayrshire businesses who join the scheme agree to inform all of their staff about the Breastfeeding etc (Scotland) Act 2005, which states that it is illegal to stop a mother feeding her baby breast or formula milk in premises where the public has general access. The business then displays the above sticker in their premises to let parents know that they can Breastfeed Happily Here. 5

6 You can find useful information about feeding your baby at a website resource to help you make the right feeding choice for your family. It has helpful information, top tips and advice from NHS feeding experts as well as real-life stories from mums. This includes photographs and short video clips and it can also be accessed on your mobile phone. You should have received a copy of Off to a Good Start at your antenatal booking appointment, which is a great source of information.
