Sponsored Events Pack Inside this pack you will find everything you need to raise money for St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group Saving Sight, Changing Lives Thank you for fundraising for St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group 1
What We Do St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group is the only low-cost centre for expert eye care in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. The original St John Eye Hospital was established in Jerusalem in Since then, we have opened satellite centres taking expert eye care to Gaza, Hebron and Anabta. We also operate two Mobile Outreach Clinics taking vital services to isolated communities where people are unable to travel easily. Our sight-saving work is carried out to the highest international standards, and is often delivered against very challenging and difficult odds. We treat patients regardless of ethnicity, religion or ability to pay. Services provided by our Hospitals, Clinics and Mobile Outreach Units revive education and employment prospects, and contribute to economic growth. By protecting sight, we are also safeguarding the financial and social independence of individuals and the livelihood of their families. Our work changes lives. What your fundraising can do: 60 could pay for Outreach education sessions in the rural West Bank 100 could enable us to increase the number of sight saving operations we perform 300 could cover the cost of a major operation 1000 could make a crucial impact on the development of our teaching and training programme 2
Our Areas of Work You can choose how we use your hard-earned funds. If you decide to make a general donation, we can spend the money where it s needed the most. Alternatively, you can choose to donate to a specific area.: Mobile Outreach Clinic Two Outreach teams deliver essential eye treatment to some of the most remote and impoverished communities in the West Bank. Without this service, many patients would struggle to access treatment Teaching and Training By training local staff we are investing in the shattered Palestinian infrastructure. We are the only establishment to offer comprehensive training for Palestinian Ophthalmologists and our Specialist Ophthalmic Nursing Course is the only one of its kind in the Middle East The Main Hospital The Jerusalem Eye Hospital is our flagship hospital. It was the first Palestinian hospital to achieve the prestigious Joint Commission International accreditation, which is recognised internationally by its peers for demanding the highest possible standards Gaza Clinic The Gaza Strip is one of the most heavily populated areas in the world. The St John Eye Clinic was established to meet the growing need for eye care in a population that has been facing increasing restrictions on their access to the main hospital in Jerusalem Anabta Clinic The Anabta Clinic was founded to serve communities who cannot access the Jerusalem Hospital without permits, if at all. Anabta s residents, many of whom are refugees from Gaza, number amongst the poorest in the occupied Palestinian territories St John Eye Hospital: Hebron The Hospital cares for the communities around Hebron and Bethlehem, many of whom are refugees. Hebron is particularly affected by movement restrictions in the West Bank. Whether you re running for retinas or having a garden party for glaucoma, we re here to help you help us! On our website ( you can find statistics, case studies and pictures, all of which can help you fundraise. If you need any information or advice about organising your event, please get in touch with us. We can provide you with publicity items and guidance on legal requirements. Our team is here to help make your event a fantastic success. You can call us on or diana.safieh@stjohneyehospital.org for any enquiries or requests. 3
How to Make Your Event a Resounding Success Pick your event Will you organise a bake sale? Run a marathon? Climb a mountain? Only you can decide what challenge you ll take on. Get the word out Let your friends, family, and colleagues know about your fundraising efforts. Promoting your event on Facebook or Twitter is an easy way of letting others know what you ll be doing. But you can always do it the oldfashioned way and have a chat with them in person. Spread your enthusiasm and maybe they ll want to help out too. Tell us what you re up to we want to support you Whether you need information, leaflets or donation forms, we can provide a helping hand. We might even join you! Set a target It s a huge motivator to have a figure to aim for. Knowing how much you re aiming to raise will help you to encourage your friends and family to donate. And there s nothing quite like the feeling of hitting that longed-for target! Publicise, Publicise, Publicise To truly gain some fundraising momentum, contact your local press to let them know what you re up to. You can even draft a press release. Contact us for marketing materials to help with this. Gift Aid it Do your best to make sure your UK taxpaying sponsors Gift Aid their donations. This will allow us to claim an extra 25p for every 1 donated. If you were to raise 200, that s a whopping 50 extra! Every little helps, and Gift Aid is an easy way of raising more money effortlessly. Read more about Gift Aid on page 6. Most importantly have fun! You re doing an amazing thing, donating your time and effort to fundraise for our cause. Not only will you and your sponsors know that you re helping people who are truly in need, we also hope you have a great and enjoyable day with whichever event you choose to put on or take part in. 4
Not sure what you want to do? Here are some simple ideas for your fundraising event. It s all about having fun and pushing yourself: Put on a ball or a Ladies Lunch Shave your hair off Organise a bake sale Do a skydive Produce a charity calendar Wash some cars Host a coffee morning Run a 10k/Half Marathon/Marathon Climb a mountain Have a Dress Down Day at work Hold an auction night Present a quiz night Do a sponsored bike ride or swim Have a bridge evening One of the best ways to fundraise is by running! Whether it s a 5k Fun Run or the Virgin London Marathon, running is a great way of getting fit and raising money. Here are some suggested events for different distances : Marathon: Virgin London Marathon, Paris Marathon, Brighton Marathon, New York Marathon Half Marathon: Bupa Great North Run, London Half Marathon, The Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon, Run to the Beat 10k: British 10k, Women s Running 10K Race Series, Birmingham Fun Run, Great Manchester Run 5k: Park Run, Color Run, Edinburgh Big Fun Run, Bupa Great North 5k, South Coast 5k Bored of just normal running? For the more adventurous, obstacle courses present a challenge of a different kind. Races like Tough Mudder and Spartan Sprint offer intense obstacles, from cargo nets to ice baths! St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group staff are always up for a challenge and regularly take part in such events. Why not contact us and see if you can join Team St John Eye Hospital in one of these events. Don t forget to take pictures on the day! We would love you to send us pictures and tell us what you did, so we can spread the word. Your efforts could inspire others to take up the cause and raise money for us! 5
How to Collect Sponsorship and Gift Aid Online The quickest and easiest way of raising money is by using Virgin Money Giving Once you re on their website, click on the heading Start Fundraising. You can then choose the appropriate type of event you will be undertaking. You will be asked to search for the charity you will be fundraising for.
