GERVAIS Cabinet Secretary Treasurer Mike Martin, PDG MD38 O, Nebraska Happy 2007 to all Lions of Massachusetts District 33Y. I hope your year is full of achievements. This District Governor s year is more than half over. Mike and I have visited most of the Clubs and held two Cabinet meetings and two very well attended Advisories. Thanks to all who participated. I hope to keep the remaining meetings as eventful. My number one goal has been to encourage all Clubs to do more community service projects. There have been a number of projects undertaken so far, and many Clubs are planning more in the months ahead. Community Service will make your Club strong. A strong Club will attract more prospective members. So let s redouble the effort to do more projects during the last half of the year. You will be hearing more about community service at our Mid-Winter Conference, January 26, 27, & 28 at the Best Western Sovereign in West Springfield. Our weekend guests will be International Director PDG David Stouffer and spouse PDG Rachel Nicola from Washington Iowa, MD 9. Both are also members of the Kalola Lioness Club. ID Dave is a multi-media designer/producer, Board member of both Lending Hands Adult Day Care and American Cancer Society Relay for Life, President of the F Troop Historical Association, and a railroad nut. Rumor has it that he ll wander over to the Model Train Show at the Big E sometime during the weekend. Friday Night Banquet will feature The Comical Mystery Tour s presentation of You Can t Toy with Death starring the Nitwit Toys; Saturday Morning Business Meeting; Sales Tables Open at nine am until four pm; The 33Y Eyemobile will be on exhibit; Late Saturday Morning 33Y Youth Speech Competition with the Statewide Theme Why Is Community Service Important ; ID David and PDG Jean will host a member orientation seminar Saturday afternoon; Guest spouse PDG Rachel will lead a one hour seminar on community service Saturday afternoon; ZC Susan and Lion Al Grimaldi will present partnering with the post office to collect used eyeglasses; LEHP Chairperson David Shields will talk about the public relations display and the Eyemobile. DG Dave s reception for our guests; Saturday Night Banquet. Come to the Best Western Sovereign in West Springfield for the day even if you cannot attend the banquet or Friday night dinner. You are sure to take a lot of information away.

2 The Eyemobile is ready to roll as soon we get enough funds to complete the purchase and install all the latest screening equipment. I am asking Clubs to support this project so that we may operate it this year. Ask your employers and friends to be part of such a worthwhile cause for Western Massachusetts by contributing to the Eyemobile. Donations to our Corporation is 501 ( c ) 3 tax deductible. The District now has four Leo Clubs. I was honored to induct the newest Leos and install the officers of the South Hadley High School Leo Club. Congratulations to South Hadley Lions for sponsoring this Leo Club. We now have more than 300 young people in our programs at Hoosac valley regional, Taconic High, Greenfield,.and now South Hadley. Leo Chairperson Diane Daley tells me there are four more Leo Clubs in the formation stage. Way to go Lions. Today s young volunteers are tomorrow s Lions. My first position in Lionism was as a Leo. But this is no time to rest. I hope to establish a Lions Club in Westfield this year and am working with our weaker Clubs to help them find the means to increase membership. Use the community needs assessment that every Club was given to determine the needs of your town and then turn those needs into community service projects. King Lions, it is time to plan for the smooth transition of power in your Clubs. Please consider asking your newer Lions to step into Club leadership positions. Elect your officers by April. Give them more time to plan their year of service. Filing the new officers form by May will help VDG Dennis get his Directory out early to jump start his year as Governor and make this District the envy of the other VDGs in the State. Please make sure that your membership reports and activity reports are in on time, so that your Club is the most eligible for the Best Clubs competition it can be. Remember that the Best Club points are earned between April first, 2006 to March 31 st, Find a computer guru now in your Club to make a spreadsheet of the points your Club has earned. You and your Secretary have the reports. Collect them now to save yourself a mad scramble later. Review the point system in the Directory. Use it to set up your spreadsheet. This effort will save Dennis and Mike from having to do it at the last minute. Send the spreadsheet to me no later than April 1st. This will give us only about three weeks to present our District selections to the PDGs for the Multiple District competition and give them just enough time to have plaques made for the State Convention presentations on April 29 th. Copies of your newsletters should have been sent monthly with your Activity reports, but it would also be most helpful to have them in a binder along with your scrapbook by the Third Advisory April 9 th for review. All awards will all be made at the 4 th Advisory, June 11 th. All Lions! Please give me your nominations for Lion, Lioness, and Leo of the Year anytime up to April first!
