2 Introduction Public Health Network Cymru based within Public Health Wales provides a range of support to practitioners and researchers across all sectors that influence any aspect of public health and health improvement in Wales. Amongst the services they provide is a seminar series that seeks to promote best practice based on existing and emerging evidence. The series covers a diverse range of topics and recent examples have included topics such as Wellbeing of LGBT health, Planning for Better Health and Wellbeing and Health Promotion in the Digital Era. The topics are determined by the network members who vote on a list of approximately 12 topics that are circulated annually and Behaviour Change was within the top 5 voted for by members. The Network made contact with Bangor University which houses the Wales Centre for Behaviour Change and the seminar was organised in collaboration with colleagues from the University. This seminar took place on the 4 May 2017 and was hosted at Bangor University and was chaired by Malcolm Ward from Public Health Wales. Overview of Presentations The day was opened by Professor Rob Roger who is based within the School of Psychology at Bangor University. This was followed by two presentations which focused on alcohol. Marc Mordey from Alcohol Concern gave a presentation entitled Poetry, football, ballroom dancing, and other ways to reduce alcohol harm to addressing alcohol related behaviour. Prof. Miles Cox from Bangor University presented on Differential Effects and Temporal Course of Attentional and Motivational Training on Excessive Drinking. The next two presentations focused on gambling. Prof. Simon Dymond from Swansea University delivered a presentation entitled Where in the world is gambling? A Wales perspective and Wynford Ellis Owen from the Living Room Cardiff spoke about Beat the Odds an initiative to help excessive gamblers. The next presentations focused on substance misuse with presentations from Dr Wolf Livingston from Glyndwr University on Substance Misuse: Analysing the

3 contribution of policy and provision to outcomes and also Dr Lee Hogan which was entitled Facilitating recovery into treatment. Individual presentations are available by contacting or can be accessed on the Public Health Network Cymru website. Parallel Sessions Three workshops were held during the afternoon: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for substance misuse: Dr Lee Hogan, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board / Bangor University Making Every Contact Count: Rhiannon Hobbs, Senior Public Health Practitioner, Public Health Wales Motivational Interviewing & Counselling - The Life Enhancement and Advancement Programme for reducing drinking. : Dr Steven Hosier, Bangor University The following photograph was taken during the ACT workshop led by Dr Lee Hogan

4 Evaluation Form 66 people registered via Eventbrite for the event and 48 attended on the day. The seminar was also live streamed via Facebook and Twitter and a total of 44 people viewed the seminar via Facebook and 151 viewed via Twitter. An evaluation form was given to all delegates at the end of the event and 11forms were returned. This was disappointing and the main reason for this was probably due to a number of delegates leaving before the afternoon workshops. An was sent to all delegates following the event asking for the completion of evaluation forms but none were returned. Quantitative Results The first question asks delegates whether they were members of Public Health Network Cymru. It is interesting to note that the majority of delegates were not members of the Network (82%). This may largely be due to the event flier being distributed amongst staff and students at Bangor University, however the Network had 13 new member registrations in the 2 weeks following the seminar. No 82% Yes 18% No reply 0% Another question on the evaluation form asks delegates to rank from one to five, (where one is not at all useful and five is very useful) how useful did you find the seminar. As can be seen the majority of people answered 4

5 or 5 (73%) to this question with 18% (2 people) providing the answer of 3. Following a closer look at the evaluation forms there was nothing to indicate why these 2 people gave the answer they did. 5 - Very useful 36% No reply 9% 1 - Not at all useful 2 0% 0% 3 18% 4 37% How useful did you find the event? Qualitative Results Further questions on the evaluation form looked for a qualitative response which is detailed below. What was your main motivation for attending this event? The majority of delegates attended the event to learn more about the subject and update personal knowledge to pass on to clients that they come in to contact with. A few people also mentioned individual speakers and came to the event to listen to their presentations. To be able to use new ideas / skills to help both myself and others Continuing Professional Development: To inform and refresh my work and maintain professional registration

6 I'm a Mental Health First Aid instructor and wish to understand more about addictive behaviours Was there anything that was of notable interest? A number of people mentioned the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) workshop as being one of their highlights from the day. Other speakers were also mentioned including Wynford Ellis Owen, Prof. Miles Cox and Dr Wolf Livingston. I enjoyed the day and found all the presentations interesting Wolf and Lee's presentations MECC / ACT. The idea that behaviour change is influenced by smallest things but lots of them How do you plan to utilise the learning gained at this event? Many of the delegates said that they would use the information gained at the event to further enhance their skills and to use the information in their everyday work. A few delegates also stated that they would contact the speakers to discuss the topics in further detail. Look at topics in more detail and practical tips to use Contact same speakers to discuss application in workplace Be more focused on positive behaviours rather than being so focused on cravings and triggers

7 What seminar / conference topics would you like to see delivered in the future? The topic areas that delegates said they would like to see covered in future events all related to behaviour change. The Network wouldn t be able to provide events on some of the topic areas stated as they are too specific but would be able to direct delegates to other more relevant organisations: Prescribed medication Insomnia Treatment outcome measured Behaviour modification for personality disorders ACT MECC Other comments Delegates had an opportunity to provide any further comments they had about the event. The only negative comment was from 2 people who thought the afternoon workshops were a little rushed and would have preferred more time for interaction. This is something to bear in mind for future seminars however the workshops were only intended to be an overview of the individual topics and delegates can contact the facilitators to attend further training. 8 One word Participants were asked to give one word to sum up how they felt about the event. These words have been inputted into Wordle ( Wordle generates word diagrams that give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the text. From this you can clearly see that informative, interesting and excellent were stated most frequently.
