8 What are People Recovering From? Symptoms: Fatigue, difficulty concentrating, distracting noises or images, extremes in mood, sleep disruption, etc. This is what people USUALLY think of. Losing a sense of power and control over one s life. Labels: Sick, Crazy, Unsafe, Incompetent, Noncompliant, and specific diagnostic labels. Losing, Family, and other Social Roles/ Identities Discrimination: From friends, loved ones, teachers, law enforcement, and society as a whole. Trauma: Up to 93% of people that end up navigating the public mental health system are trauma survivors. Life is limited messages from practitioners and loved ones. Losing hope about one s dreams and future. Poverty: the belief that disability is your only option, homelessness. Institutionalization: Juvenile Justice, Hospitals, and/ or Segregated Community Life

Manage and navigate symptoms experiences in ways that work for the individual, maximizing choice, decisionmaking, and exploring wellness strategies that help maintain health over the long haul. Meaningful work, relationship, and other social roles that maximize one s talents, strengths, and promote ongoing growth and learning like anyone else. Your life is full of possibility I believe in you messages from practitioners and loved ones. Bearing witness. Promoting a sense of safety and restoring power over one s life. Hopeful pursuit of one s dreams and future, supported by people that have been there (peers), loved ones, and other supporters. Pursuing a life of one wants, in the community of his or her choosing. Society s beliefs and attitudes change through education, personal encounters, changes in media practices, and the arts.
