Safeguarding Adults Survey Results August 2015

Contents What we did... 3 What we found out... 4 Public Survey... 4 Workforce Survey

What we did We were asked by the Safeguarding Adults Board to undertake some engagement work to help shape the next York Safeguarding Adults Strategy. We created two surveys, one for the public, one for people working in health and care. Both were available online. We also asked York People First to create an Easy Read version of the public survey. We also circulated paper copies and a printable version of the public survey. These surveys were available from the end of April, and remained open until the end of July. We received 28 responses to the workforce survey, and 39 to the public survey. This report was completed in addition to our planned work for the year. 3

What we found out Public Survey Question 1. Would you know what to do if you or someone you care about was being abused? 5% 10% 54% 22% 7% 2% Yes No Don't know Tell someone Walk away Other Respondents 39, giving 41 answers. Of those who would tell someone; I would tell 5% 9% 5% 24% 29% 28% Police Social Services Friends Family Church Other service 4

Question 2 Who would you feel safe to talk to about this? Question 3 Are there people, places or organisations where you feel able to talk about worries of this kind? 7% 7% 10% 7% 10% 3% 3% 10% 43% Voluntary groups Police CYC Social Services / Safeguarding Friends and family Church / Community Centre Relevant inspection authority, CQC Mental Health services GP Advocacy 5

Question 4 Are there people, places or organisations that should be able to help you? 3% Voluntary groups 6% 3% Police 6% 23% CYC Social Services / Safeguarding 6% Managers 6% 8% 8% 14% 17% Mental Health staff including psychiatrists, counsellors Family Church Carer Question 5 - If you or someone you care about was involved in a safeguarding case what would you want from people responsible for investigating it? This word cloud is generated from all the responses. The larger the word, the more it was used. Me = 6 times. Right = 2 times 6

Question 6 Would you want support to help you through the process? 0% 8% Yes No Don't know 92% 38 responses, 35 yes, 3 don t know 3 text responses giving yes answers. These included a statement I would like to have support from the police and my friends because then I would feel safe Question 7 Who would you look to for support?

Question 8 Are you aware that if you are worried that someone is being abused you can contact City of York Council's Safeguarding Team? 43% 57% Yes No Comments 1. Yes, this exists, but have had no contact with them: Are they active, effective and discreet? 2. Like water off a duck s back 3. I am now and it is very useful to know the Safeguarding team 4. I consider that the way carers are treated within mental health services is so poor that it constitutes emotional abuse. However, it is easier to ask Safeguarding to investigate a specific incidence of abuse, whereas the problem is more one of continued let-downs of carers to the point where people become worn down and ill. 5. I greatly welcome their support but feel they have a very difficult role in the current system 8

Question 10 What age are you? Over 75 Question 11 Gender 64% 36% Male Female 9

Question 15 Do you consider yourself to be a disabled person? 36% 64% Yes No 33 responses Question 16 Are you a carer? 57% 43% Yes No 7 responses 10

Question 3 Have you attended safeguarding training? 19% Yes No 81% Comments Online training only x 5 The online training questions need changing. I have been doing the online training for 5 years and this is not challenging people In previous jobs face to face adults and children s safeguarding training. Current job e-learning only Was a very good session Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 12

Question 4 Has the training given you all the skills you need to respond to safeguarding concerns? 8% 23% 69% Yes No Not sure Comments I feel the training is out of date Appropriate for my post Didn t go on any training Never had to put theory into practice yet But felt the training didn t give a good understanding of the overall process, just your bit. I like to know the full picture Question 5 If you or someone you work with was involved in a safeguarding investigation what would you want from the people responsible for investigating it? This word cloud is generated from all the responses. The larger the word, the more it was used. Involved = 8 times. Timescales = 2 times 13

Question 6 Would you want support to help you through the process? 11% 8% Yes No Don't know 81% Comments To make sure I went through the correct process Depends how serious If the case was particularly troubling or complex Question 7 16 Who would you look to for support? Safeguarding Line manager Colleagues / team peer support Friends / family CCG Police Health Depends 14

Question 8 What does Making Safeguarding Personal mean to you? This word cloud is generated from all the responses. The larger the word, the more it was used. Person = 7 times. Know = 2 times 15

Question 9 Is there anything you want the Safeguarding Adults Board to think about? Key themes Training Better online training and awareness training TEWV run a parental mental health face to face course re risks to children of parents who have mental health issues. This could be rolled out and extended to children whose parents have mental health or physical impairments which increase risk to the child. CHC nurses assess individuals in their own homes more awareness of the impact on children / grandchildren is required Scenario training as not sure people understand what constitutes abuse greater promotion on the definitions of abuse for both physical and emotional; that abuse isn t just confined to institutions it happens in people s homes Information An information leaflet with a description for Safeguarding and how it affects myself as an admin team member It would be useful to know contact numbers for the safeguarding team so we know who to contact A directory of where to go for advice and support would be valuable Prevention It is not part of my role currently but I do need a general level of awareness More understanding that as a nurse our aim should be to intervene before things become an issue. Many bad situations are caused by stress in carers. If we as nurses can identify these stresses sooner rather than later we could prevent situations from escalating. Remember we don t just care for an individual we care for a family or a group of people 16

There has to be an ethos that everyone understands that safeguarding is everyone s business, and whether in work or private life, looking out for others is a moral obligation General CYC have some work to do in the process of involving the PCU Adult Safeguarding Team Not really relevant to my daily job How safeguarding links with other options for resolving problems within families or neighbourhoods, and how we make it easy for people to get the right help as fast as possible. Wider awareness of routes through other processes might help keep capacity in the safeguarding team for where it is most needed Question 10 Do you have any other comments you would like to make? I would not hesitate to contact you as any kind of abuse is not acceptable Need more advertising about safeguarding in both workplace and the public eye 17

Question 12 How would you describe the organisation you work for? 4% 4% 12% 8% 16% 56% Healthcare NHS Statutory Voluntary and Community Sector Care Home Health Question 13 How many people are employed by your organisation?

Question 14 What age are you? Question 20 Are you a carer? 8% 13% Yes No Former carer 79% 19
