2 The Kaizen Year 2013 Dear Colleagues As we start 2014 we wanted to take a moment to reflect on last year, the work we delivered and the exciting partnerships we developed. These are incredibly challenging times for everyone in the community sector, but with the challenges come opportunities to think and do things differently. There is no way for us collectively to achieve what we need to by doing the same things as in the past, and we relish this environment of change as an opportunity to learn and develop new ways of approaching the challenges in our communities was a year full of interesting projects. This newsletter aims at giving a flavour of what we were up to last year; we also want to take the chance to wish you a very good year in 2014! Kaizen goes International For the first time, in 2013 we took Kaizen out into the wider world, delivering projects on 3 continents (Africa and the Americas as well as Europe). We very much hope this is the start of lots more international work in the years to come In South Africa we co-facilitated a series of community conversations and workshops with Reverend Tutu In Canada we delivered training and consultancy on the care system for looked after children In Bermuda we worked with the Government and the Women s Council, running training on community driven development and how to bring a social enterprise model to address some of the challenges the country is facing We are currently in discussions about future work in Ghana, South America and Canada Engagement We have been working on developing engagement thinking and practice over many years, and continue to deliver projects and share our approach with organisations across the community sector. Engagement work included: Development of a large training programme on community engagement for LB Sutton with the view that this will role out for staff from across directorates in 2014 in order to forge a council wide approach to community engagement Continuing our series of free open workshops on our engagement models. We delivered 4 of these workshops attended by over 150 practitioners and will be holding more this coming year as part of our desire to contribute to practice development in the sector. Thanks to Peabody and Poplar HARCA for hosting us at their training venues. Consultancy and training on engagement for the Local Government Association senior leadership programmes for Council Leaders and Chief Executives Working with schools across the country on how they can bring a strategic approach to parent and family engagement We have started an action research project for 2 of the Sainsbury Family Trusts looking at how engagement links to project outcomes and what can be done to improve engagement delivery in the sector. 3 Professional development training We ve provided training, coaching and consultancy support for a variety of organisations including local authorities, charities, schools and the voluntary sector. A few examples are below: Delivery of a Future Leaders training programme for managers in Kent CC Professional development workshops on engagement, resilience, creativity, innovation, networking and change management Staff development Training for organisations including FutureGov, Cause 4, Caritas Westminster, Westway Development Trust byline Lorem Ipsum Aliquam dolor. Work with young people and the Education Sector We have delivered a wide range of work with young people, including: We have now worked with students and staff from more than 350 schools, including Primary, Secondary and Specialist Academies. An ongoing training programme for the U-18 squad of Fulham FC. This team has won the Premier League for their age for the past 3 years. Our role has been to support with their wider self-development off the field, and we have also been running workshops with parents of Academy players which will continue in 2014 A leadership programme on behalf of the London Legacy Development Corporation, working with young people in an E. London Secondary school who had low aspirations and confidence We are delivering Parent Engagement Strategic Workshops for the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust for senior leaders in 9 regions across England, supporting schools in developing cohesive strategic engagement plans for engaging parents, pupils and the wider community. We ve delivered Leadership Workshops for young people, supporting them to take ownership of their life, their learning and how they want the school to be. Coaching and training for senior school leaders Inset days for staff teams Leadership workshops for young people participating in an intensive employment programme for Young Potential East Midlands and victims of abuse in the Midlands for Imara A programme to increase knowledge and awareness around gangs for Young Advisors in Waltham Forest Kaizen Newsletter
4 Research We have increasingly been asked to conduct research in the community sector, both with young people, adults and sector professionals. Examples include: A large-scale community engagement, research and empowerment project in an estate in South London for Viridian Housing. This was a multicomponent project that included in depth personal interviews, group workshops and consultancy and resulted in significant increase in resident activity and the development of an action plan to improve the estate through partnership between residents and the housing provider Community research in East London on behalf of the Canal and River Trust and the London Legacy Development Corporation. A nationwide consultation with young people and youth sector professionals about the challenges, needs and opportunities for young people Care Sector We continue our work with Action for Children, providing CPD for managers and staff across several different units Kaizen have formed a partnership with the Who Cares? Trust. We have delivered a youth leadership training for them and will be facilitating workshops for young people, carers and staff. We have been contracted to deliver workshops for various local authorities and care providers; these range from leadership workshops for Children in Care Councils to working with challenging behaviour workshops for parents, carers and staff to training on Corporate Parenting for officers and members. David Akinsanya, national spokesperson for looked after children, continues to do all his work in the care sector with Kaizen. He has been the keynote speaker at conferences across the country, delivered training for professionals and presented at awards ceremonies. Kaizen Newsletter
