1 Health Disparities Summit Bethesda, MD Addressing Clinical Trials In Partnership with Regional NCI/CIS Offices Evelyn González, MA July 17, 2007

2 Objectives Identify your regional CIS office/representative Increased understanding of how CIS addresses clinical trials Learn how regional offices are working with partner organizations to address clinical trials Be inspired and motivated to work on a clinical trials project with your regional CIS office

3 Cancer Information Service - Overview Information Service 3 Call centers (WA,NY,FL) Partnership 15 offices (see map) 4 office Research Highly trained Information Specialist provide callers (health professionals or lay) with information about clinical trials Conduct tailored searches for available trails Work with patients to increase communication with healthcare team and to conduct clinical trial searches Work with health professionals to provide information and clinical trials searches CT are a priority area CIS staff assist with program planning, goals to develop, expand and/or modify educational programs Trainings for health professionals or train the trainer Sit on advisory and planning committees Collaborate and support research projects Focused on research that explores health communications and health behavior questions Support research projects to assess other factors of interest to partners Can provide technical support as a member of the research team.

4 Working with Partnership Training: Training of CNP staff and/or coalition members Co-facilitate clinical trials training for health professionals serving your priority audience Trainings can be tailored according to priority cancer sites, types of clinical trials i.e. prevention trails, diagnostic, treatment, QOL Examples: ATECAR (Asian Tobacco Education Cancer Awareness and Research) in collaboration with Temple University Trained coalition members on clinical trials Developed a 3x5 reference card to promote three prevention trials to assist in education and recruitment efforts. University of Puerto Rico, co-developed education plan and action plan for institutional implementation

5 Working with Partnership Education and Outreach Support Planning educational programs or conferences Find speaker or be a presenter Develop evaluation (pre/post test) Develop activities to support educational efforts Find and/or develop culturally appropriate materials Assist with development of education or outreach plans, logic models Example: Increasing Access to Clinical and Education Studies (ACES) collaboration with TJU Developing training curricula for priority populations Focus was on overcoming barriers to recruitment Stressed human protection mechanisms Provided clinical trials content Exercises to facilitate discussion in lay community Interview participants ala Oprah style Scenarios for working groups to discuss Review articles in magazines, newspapers

6 Working with Partnership Assessments Develop learning needs assessments of staff Survey instruments Example: New England CIS development an assessment tool to evaluation barrier to cancer clinical trials participation among oncologist in Media Campaigns Assist with development of media campaigns Provide key messages and/or content Assist with focus groups Example: Texas worked with Redes en Acción on a national campaign to promote clinical trials to Latinos Hawaii assisted with the development of website content

7 Working with Partnership Presentations CIS representatives can present CIS can assist you with integrating clinical trials messages into your presentations State Comprehensive Cancer Control Plans Each CIS office is involved in state efforts Efforts to include clinical trials into plans CIS can introduce CNPs to CCC process
