2 About us We are the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee. We are part of the NHS. We buy services that are only provided by a few centres in the UK for patients in Wales. We make sure people can get a chest and lung operation if they need it.

3 About this consultation We have been thinking about the best way for adults in South Wales to get chest and lung operations. Chest or lung operations can help with things like: Lung cancer Holes in the lung Tests to see what illness someone has We think adults in South Wales need better care.

4 We have listened to a lot of people already. Now we want to tell you what we think is the best plan. We want to listen to your ideas about our plan. Then Health Boards and a Joint Committee will decide what to do. There are 2 sets of questions at the end of this form.

6 What the experts told us Chest and lung operations for adults happen in Cardiff and Swansea. We talked to The Royal College of Surgeons. They told us that people in South Wales will get better care if we have 1 team just for people who need chest and lung operations. We listened to other experts too. They told us the same thing.

7 This is why: We need a centre in South Wales because a lot of adults need chest and lung operations. Staff must be experts in chest and lung operations. That way they can give very good care to people who need them. 1 team working in 1 hospital can give very good care to a lot of people.

8 What we have thought about How easy will it be for patients to get care at the centre? Will the centre be able to give the care everyone needs in the future? Will the centre be able to do research to find better ways to make care better? How will having 1 big centre affect the other hospitals in South Wales?

9 What an independent Panel say we should do An Independent Panel gave us advice. They said that the 1 big centre should be at Morriston Hospital in Swansea. Health Boards are looking at the best way this can work.

10 What does 1 big centre at Morriston Hospital mean for patients? Many adults in South Wales will go to Morriston Hospital for chest and lung operations as usual. People who would have had their chest and lung operations in Cardiff Hospital will go to Morriston instead. The journey to Morriston Hospital may be longer for people who have their chest and lung operations in Cardiff at the moment. Nothing will change for people in North Wales and North Powys.

11 Only the operations and a check-up just before the operation will move to Morriston Hospital. Tests and appointments with your chest doctor and other specialists will not move. Where possible, we want every Health Board to have a chest and lung clinic. This means patients will get better care close to home. They will only need to travel further for their operation and sometimes for a check-up just before it.

12 Better health care for everyone This is not about saving money. We want people to get the best care possible. The 1 big centre will give people high quality specialist care. Patients are likely to do better in a big centre.

13 A bigger centre will be better for providing high quality care in the future. It is important that everyone gets better health care. We need to know if some groups of people may not be helped by the change. So at the end of this form, we ask some questions about you. This is so we can listen to different groups of people in South Wales.

14 What happens next? After everyone tells us what they think we will write a report. It will be shared with Health Boards, Community Health Councils and the Joint Committee. We decide by the end of October 2018 what to do. We will show how we used what people said to help us decide.
