Thank you for your commitment to serve as a 2014 Midwest Academy Awards Gala Table Captain! Your willingness to invite friends, family and colleagues to join you in support of Midwest Academy is integral to the success of the event. The proceeds of the 2014 Academy Awards Gala will help further the mission of the Midwest Academy to support the building of infrastructure for the progressive movement for social justice. The Midwest Academy advances movements for progressive social change by teaching strategic, rigorous, results-oriented approach to social action and organization building. The Academy provides training (introductory and advanced) and consulting, equipping organizers, leaders, and their organizations to think and act strategically to win justice for all. This year s Gala will highlight victories of the past year; celebrate three outstanding honorees of the Progressive moment, and gear up for the work ahead of us in the year ahead. We are excited to share our work with longtime friends and supporters, and new ones who are just learning about Midwest Academy for the first time. 2 What You Need to Know What am I responsible for? As a Table Captain you are responsible for: Filling your table with 8 guests (including yourself) and acting as the host of your table during the Gala. Since this is a fundraiser, your guests will be invited to make a donation to Midwest Academy. Be clear with your guests about what you are inviting them to. Communicating to your guests ahead of time that there will be opportunities to donate can help avoid misunderstandings about gift expectations at the event. What is the Best Way to Invite Guests? In our experience, this is what works: Start inviting early. Create your Dream Team guest list which can include your friends, family, co- workers, colleagues, book club members, neighbors, etc. Remember, you may need to invite people since not everyone you invite will be able to attend. Use our attached sample letter template when extending invitations, to make it easy for you. 1 month before the gala: Confirm your guest s attendance and check in with those you haven't heard back from yet. Your table accommodates8 people. If you have more, we can seat them at an adjacent table, if you have less we may be able to help. For those guests that cannot attend, encourage them to make a donation through Midwest Academy s website, Less than 1 month before the gala: Remind your confirmed guests of the date, time and location of the event. 10 days before the gala: If you haven't done so already, your completed confirmed Guest List form to: Robbie@midwestacademy.com Day of event: Have fun! We are here if you have any questions during the gala. Post event: Relax and feel proud of your accomplishments! Take the time to send your guests a quick thank you note. How Do I Confirm My Guest s Attendance with Midwest Academy? Guests are confirmed when we receive one of the following: All guests must be confirmed by Friday, December 5th. Guests are considered confirmed when we receive their name on the list you provide us. Use the attached form to confirm your guests. Once your guest is confirmed, we will send them an , copying you, which provides them the logistics of the evening and noting you as their Table Captain. What Happens at the Academy Awards Gala? At the event you and your guests will: Have fun! Enjoy great food and an open bar. Mingle with 300 other friends of Midwest Academy. Experience an unforgettable Awards Presentation recognizing three outstanding leaders of the progressive community Be asked to make a personal contribution in support of Midwest Academy s work.

4 Hello Friend, I am writing to invite you to join me at a wonderful event benefiting a very important and vital organization, Midwest Academy. Look at your calendar and save the date for the Midwest Academy Awards Gala, on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at the Sphinx Club in Washington, DC! Since its inception in 1973, Midwest Academy s mission has been to support the building of infrastructure for the progressive movement for social justice. To the Academy, this means fostering the creation of democratically governed organizations which will win real improvements in peoples live, give people a sense of their own power to improve society and alter the unequal relations of power to build more democracy and participation for freedom and justice for all. During the evening, Midwest Academy will honor Gloria Steinem with the Lifetime Achievement Award, President Lee Saunders of AFSCME with a Progressive Leadership Award and Saru Jayaraman, co-founder and co-director of ROC United with the Heather Award during a short program. Together, with your participation, we will gather 300 guests in support of Midwest Academy. In turn, funds raised through this event will allow Midwest Academy to continue and grow the very important work it does to help train the current and next generations of community organizers and their organizations. December 10 th, 2014 Sphinx Club 1315 K St NW Washington, DC 6pm Cocktail Hour 7:30pm Awards Reception OPTION ONE (If your guests will be purchasing tickets): The cost to attend the gala is $250 per person by Dec 9 th and we are counting on each guest to help Midwest Academy with an additional show of support by participating in the Call to Action for the alumni s Carry It On Campaign, which helps raise support for scholarships for young organizers to participate in our programs. OPTION TWO (If you have purchased the table): I have purchased a table and would be honored to have you as my guest.
