Families 46% of homeless individuals in Utah are members of families(1). Primarily single mothers with children. The single largest demographic of the homeless community % of families leave shelter within 6 months of their entry date (2). The remaining 20-30% require additional case management and therapy before they can become housing independent. This is primarily due to domestic violence though some are due to mental health, chronic health, and substance use.
Domestic Violence Up to 57% of all homeless families report domestic violence as the immediate cause of their homelessness (3). Among single mothers with children experiencing homelessness, more than 80% had previously experienced domestic violence (3).
Homeless Youth Nationally 20-40% of homeless youth identify as LBGTQ(6), in Utah it s 50-60% (7). One in seven young people between the ages of 10 and 18 will run away (6) 46 percent of runaway and homeless youth reported being physically abused, 38 percent reported being emotionally abused, and 17 percent reported being forced into unwanted sexual activity by a family or household member(6) Estimates of the number of pregnant homeless girls are between 6 and 22 percent(6)
Veterans Nationally and in Utah veteran homelessness is 13% of the total homeless population (8). Only 7% of homeless veterans are eligible for comprehensive housing services (8)
Mental Health Disorders Only 8.6% of the homeless population has a severe mental health disorder(9) this has direct correlation to the chronic homeless population. Though this group has direct tie into substance use, which constitutes 38% of the utah homeless population that are using substances. (9)
The homeless we see are just the tip of the Iceberg 46% of the homeless are members of families w/children. 40% are single men, though most of them are employed. 14% are single women, but more women are housed in survival sex situations or a domestic violence situation, so they re not safe. Though not counted as homeless.

Homeless Population 13,614 total people in Utah were homeless throughout 2016 (5) Most of the homeless population isn t on the street during the day. They re students in K-12 and college. They re working or present at public buildings. At night they return to a homeless/domestic violence shelter or a close friend/family to couch surf. Couch surfing is when one relies on friends, co-workers, people they attend church with, neighbors, and families to stay in a side room or sleep on their couch. This relies on bouncing back and forth between a network of acquaintances so one doesn t burn bridges.
Chronic Homelessness
Chronic Homelessness Over the past ten years only 4-10% of the total Utah homeless population was chronically homeless (4). The chronic homeless are the people we see on the street, who have multiple severe disabilities to cognitive, physical, mental health, and addiction. The rest are what are called the working poor, underemployed people working 1-3 jobs but not making enough to afford housing.
