In this guide you ll find out: ideas to get your fundraising off the ground the ways you re helping change the lives of blood cancer patients throughout the UK some important blood cancer facts how to order our fundraising materials how to keep your fundraising safe and legal what support you ll get from us. If you ve got any questions about your event, get in touch with us: Get more information on our website at bloodwise.org.uk/get-involved 2 Welcome to our team

a few ideas to get you started There are 137 different types of blood cancer, but thousands of ways you can help us to beat them. If you re not sure where to start with your fundraising, why not consider one of these ideas? Turn vice into virtue Give up something you love to beat blood cancer. It doesn t have to be dry January or sober October. Ditch the coffee, chocolate or social media or walk or cycle to work and donate your commute cost. Try swishing A clothes swap (swishing) party is a great way to update your wardrobe with your friends pre-loved clothes. Charge an entry of 5 or 10 or set a price for every swap. Did you know, the average UK household owns around 4,000 worth of clothes?! Dress up or down It doesn t have to be Halloween or Christmas have a fancy dress, ownclothes or wear-a-onesie day on any day of the year and ask everyone to pay 1 to join in. Put your small change to work Put a collection tin in your place of work, your school or your local shop, or take to the streets with our buckets to make small change have a big impact for blood cancer patients! Host a quiz Everyone loves a trip down to their local! Why not host a quiz in a local pub or club for you and your friends? Have a bake sale Bake a batch of your favourite treats and sell them in work or at school. It doesn t even have to be cookies and cupcakes you could make sweets or healthy treats. 3 A few ideas to get you started

kick start your fundraising So you ve decided what you d like to do to raise money for Bloodwise. Then let s get the ball rolling we have loads of tips to help you make the most of your fundraising. 4 Kick start your fundraising Set up your event online If you re holding an event, you can raise money online as well if you set up a JustGiving page. Once you ve set up a fundraising page, set yourself a fundraising target and personalise your JustGiving page so your friends and family can keep up to date with your fundraising. Encourage all those who can t make your event to donate to your page and share photos and updates both before, during and after it. Set up your page at JustGiving.com Shout about your event on social media and by Spread the word about what you re doing and why you re doing it on Facebook, Twitter and any other social media channels you re on here are some tips and ideas. Sharing videos and photos is especially effective: don t forget to always include a link to your JustGiving page. Personal pictures and stories of you are always a good idea. You might also like to share general posts about Bloodwise and what your supporters money can help us achieve. Contact your local team if you need help on what to post (see page 10). Don t forget to use too research suggests that a direct to your contacts is actually one of the most successful ways to encourage donations. Get your workplace involved Your workplace is a great place to collect donations. the link to your JustGiving page to all your colleagues, put up posters and consider having a cake sale or another work event to boost your total. It s also worth asking your company about matched giving. Many organisations have a budget for charitable giving and will happily offer to match your fundraising total or make a bulk donation. Contact the local press Reach further than your immediate friends and family to make a bigger impact. If you think your fundraising makes a good story, send a press release and some good photographs to your local newspapers and radio stations. If you re featured, not only will you encourage donations for your challenge, but you ll be creating greater awareness of blood cancer. You can find advice and a template for creating a press release at bloodwise.org.uk/media

Make your donations go further Gift Aid is a scheme that enables us to claim an extra 25p for every 1 donated, provided the person donating pays tax in the UK. Most websites will ask people visiting your fundraising page if they re based in the UK and whether they d like to add Gift Aid to their donation. Our paper sponsor forms also include a column for Gift Aid. Please encourage people to add Gift Aid to their donation, as it means we ll be able put even more towards beating blood cancer. You can download our sponsor forms at bloodwise.org.uk/sponsor-form 5 Make your donations go further

Keeping your event safe and legal When you re planning your fundraising, it s always really important to put a few things in place to ensure your event stays safe and on the right side of the law! Here are our pointers. Public liability insurance If you re planning to host an event in support of Bloodwise and you fill in our risk assessment, we ll be able to cover your event under our public liability insurance. We have two types of risk assessment, depending on the scale of your event, so please get in contact with your local fundraising team (see page 10) to get the right form for your event. First aid If you re organising a big event it s always worth checking in with St John s Ambulance about what level of first aid your event may need. Criteria usually include a number of people; the type of event; the location; the likely weather; and other risks involved. Food hygiene If your event involves food, the Food Standards Agency website provides great guidelines for preparing, handling and cooking food and it s vital that you follow their guidelines. If you are using a caterer you will just need to make sure they have a Food Hygiene Certificate and Public Liability Insurance. Find the Food Standards Authority website at food.gov.uk Alcohol and public entertainment licence If your event will involve any of the following activities, you ll need to contact your local council to get a licence: music and dancing sale of alcohol provision of food or drink. This list doesn t cover everything though, so please do check which licences you will need when planning your event. Raffles, lotteries and prize draws For simple raffles where the tickets will all be sold and the raffle drawn on the night, all you need to remember is to charge a standard price for each ticket and take along cloakroom-style raffle books. If you plan to run your raffle over a longer period of time or sell tickets at more than one venue, please get in contact with us, because you ll need a licence. Your tickets will also need to include details of the raffle prizes, draw venue and date. We have templates that you can use for this. 6 Keeping your event safe and legal

HOW YOUR FUNDRAISING IS HELPING to BEAT BLOOD CANCER We don t receive any government funding, so every single penny invested in our worldclass research and patient services is thanks to people like you. Fundraising feels good, and nothing motivates you to raise lots of money than knowing your friends and family are sponsoring and supporting you. 200 Raise 200 and you could ensure every single person diagnosed with blood cancer today is armed with vital knowledge of their disease by sending them our high quality patient information booklets. 100 Raise 100 and you could help us reach out to blood cancer patients when they need us the most, by providing 150 hospital waiting rooms information posters that show the ways we can help. 500 Raise 500 and you could fund a nurse to provide patients help, support, and a hand to hold at one of our groundbreaking clinical trials for three days. Those few extra pounds you tease out of friends, family and workmates all add up, and could be the boost that funds the next big blood cancer breakthrough. So aim high, push yourself, and be proud you re making our life-saving work possible. We couldn t do it without you Raise 1000 and you could fund crucial investigation into developing less harsh treatments for people with blood cancer allowing researchers to analyse the DNA of 40 patients. 7 How your fundraising is helping

blood cancer: the facts Every 14 minutes in the UK, someone is diagnosed with blood cancer or a related disorder that s over 100 every day. Blood cancer is the UK s fifth most common cancer, and the most common cancer in children and young people. Nearly a quarter of a million people in the UK are living with blood cancer. 38 people die from blood cancer every day in the UK 14,000 people each year. Your fundraising is making a massive difference for children like Nancy. She was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) when she was just four and a half years old. 50 years ago, hardly any children survived this disease today, thanks to the support of people like you, nearly 9 in 10 children will survive. 8 Blood cancer: the facts There s still more to do treatments often have harsh side effects, and sadly not every child s is successful. But with your backing we ll be able to find new, better treatments for ALL and every single one of the 137 different types of blood cancer.

get kitted out Whether you re arranging a cake sale in your office or a ball at your local golf club, we can provide you with loads of materials to show the world that you re Bloodwise standing united with blood cancer patients and supporting our life-saving work.
