1 MESSAGE FROM Board Chair and Chief Librarian MESSAGE FROM the Mayor On behalf of City Council, I congratulate the Surrey Libraries on another successful year serving the needs of our diverse and growing community. Karen Reid Sidhu Board Chair Surinder Boghal Chief Librarian Public libraries continue to play a vital role in making cities vibrant and accessible for all. Surrey Libraries is the only communitybased organization dedicated to ensuring that everyone has access to space, information, and tools to enrich their lives, regardless of their socio-economic background, age, race, physical, or cognitive abilities. Libraries are also known to foster personal connections that give people an enhanced sense of purpose. Surrey Libraries is evolving to meet the needs of our growing community by providing innovative programming and resources. Extending our online reach was a focus during the year and we launched a new website that greatly improved user experience and allowed us to include a comprehensive program and event calendar. We also launched online tools to help writers build skills, connect, and get their works out into the community with greater ease. We want to extend our appreciation to the ongoing support of the Mayor and City of Surrey Council, as well as the Province of British Columbia. We would also like to thank the Board and staff of Surrey Libraries for their continued dedication in providing outstanding service, and to the many volunteers, donors, and patrons who give us their ongoing support LIBRARY BOARD Seline Kutan, Michael Kendler, Karen Reid Sidhu, Greg Down, Neelam Sahota, Dave Woods, Perbeen Mann (absent: Stanley Chang) As the fastest growing city in the province, the City of Surrey is working hard to meet the increasing demands of its residents. The Library plays a vital role in supporting these demands. Linda Hepner Mayor Surrey Libraries provides every resident the opportunity to access knowledge, services, and resources that help them thrive in our evolving and increasingly complex world. The Library encourages and supports life-long learning and contributes to the economic and social well-being of our citizens. In addition to accessing information and participating in wide-ranging programming, people also enjoy the Library as a social and community gathering place. Library membership provides residents with free access to books, magazines, music, videos, programs and numerous online and digital resources such as self-publishing and language learning platforms. There is truly something for everyone to discover at the Library. I encourage everyone to visit one of the nine Surrey Libraries branches and sign up for a free library card and start exploring Annual Report

2 Libraries became my second home and I noticed that no matter what age, we all belong. We have people from different regions, countries, colours, religions, races and cultures. We love and respect each other without any bias. I believe this diversity makes Canada one of the greatest countries in the world. - Adris, Library Champion 2017 Photo credit: Ema Peter
