2 FINISHING THE FIGHT WITH THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY For 100 years, the American Cancer Society has been leading the fight to end cancer. One hundred years ago, the word cancer was only spoken about in whispers. Very little was known about the disease, except that it was almost certainly a death sentence. In 1913, a group of 15 prominent physicians and businessmen in New York City, who knew they had to raise public awareness about cancer in order to fight it, came together to form the American Cancer Society for the Control of Cancer, which later became the American Cancer Society. Since then, the Society has become the global leader in the fight to end cancer, with more than 3 million passionate volunteers helping us save lives and create a world with more birthdays. Saving Lives During the past 100 years, the American Cancer Society has grown to meet the needs of people facing cancer and to best overcome challenges we face in fighting the disease. We ve developed new programs and services, including cancer patient outreach services, prevention and early detection awareness and education, and a world-class research program to help find cancer s causes and cures. In fact, the Society is the largest private not-for-profit funder of cancer research in the United States, with more than $3.9 billion invested since 1946, playing a role in nearly every major cancer research breakthrough. We are working to finish the fight by: Helping people everywhere take steps to prevent cancer or find it early, when it s easiest to treat Providing reliable information to help people make decisions, free transportation to and from cancer treatment, or a free place to stay while receiving treatment away from home. Working with lawmakers everywhere to make this world a healthier place to live, and rallying communities around the globe to join our fight Thanks in part to our lifesaving work, cancer deaths have declined by 20 percent since the early 1990s, meaning nearly 1.2 million lives have been saved that would have otherwise been lost to cancer. From grassroots community events to corporate giving, our lifesaving work would not be possible without our dedicated supporters. Seventy-two cents of every dollar donated to the Society is invested directly in research, prevention, detection, treatment, and patient support programs.
