1 HISTORY OF RECOVERY THE RECOVERY TO PRACTICE (RTP) INITIATIVE: EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE RECOVERY-ORIENTED ADDICTION PROFESSIONAL Presented by Misti A. Storie, MS, NCC, APC September 30, 2014 o Recovery has always had a stronghold in the addic8on profession and its workforce. o The addic8on profession, founded by individuals in recovery, laid the groundwork to provide addic8on services within a recovery orienta8on. o Not all addic8on professionals agree on all aspects of what recovery means, how to achieve it, and who is eligible. o The make- up of the profession 8pped from being en8rely of those in recovery from substance abuse personally to only half. A presenta*on by NAADAC, the Associa*on for Addic*on Professionals OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT As a part of the federal government s efforts to promote recovery for all Americans affected by addic8on, SAMHSA launched its Recovery to Prac8ce (RTP) Ini8a8ve. NAADAC SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS YEAR 1: SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS Through the Recovery to Prac8ce (RTP) Ini8a8ve, NAADAC was asked to determine the extent to which recovery- oriented concepts, values, and prac8ces exist within all aspects of the addic8on profession in order to develop a recovery- oriented training curriculum for the workforce. A presenta*on by NAADAC, the Associa*on for Addic*on Professionals 1

Carmen Geby, City of Alexandria Rick Harwood, Na8onal Associa8on of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors (NASADAD) Tom Hill, Faces and Voices of Recovery Jean LaCour, Ph. GAPS competency of trauma- informed care cultural diversity medica8on- assisted treatment co- occurring disorders role of peer recovery support specialists/coaches In general, members of the addic8on profession: understand recovery- oriented concepts u8lize recovery- oriented prac8ces have recovery- related opportuni8es for educa8on, training, literature, cer8fica8on, and licensure Many states are s8ll in the early implementa8on stages of formally shiling to a recovery orienta8on. The response of the addic8on profession to recovery concepts is generally enthusias8c whilst being met with apprehension from the workforce. 3

4 Many economic and poli8cal challenges to integra8ng a full recovery orienta8on within the addic8on profession were discovered (funding and policy issues). In addi8on, social challenges (e.g. workforce resistance to change) and technological barriers (e.g. lack of full electronic records) also impede the adop8on of a recovery orienta8on. However, there has been progress towards a recovery orienta8on and there are economic, poli8cal, social, and technological advances on which the movement can rely as it progresses. Even though there are many challenges and opportuni8es present to developing a training curriculum for the addic8on profession, it is possible and necessary to fully implement a recovery- oriented model of care!
