2 What is National Youth Violence Prevention Week? The National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) is proud to be a founding partner of the National Youth Violence Prevention Week Campaign Founded in 2001, NYVPW hopes to raise awareness and educate communities on effective strategies to prevent or reduce youth violence The campaign is a week-long event with each day of the week corresponding to a specific challenge presented by one of the sponsors and executed by communities around the country: Monday, April 4: Promoting Respect and Tolerance, sponsored by Teaching Tolerance Tuesday, April 5: Manage Your Anger, Don t Let it Manage You, sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics Wednesday, April 6: Resolve Conflicts Peacefully, sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network Thursday, April 7: Support Safety, sponsored by the STRYVE Action Council Friday, April 8: Unite in Action, sponsored by Youth Service America For additional information on NYVPW please visit

3 Suggested Activities for NYVPW 2016 April 4th: Promote Respect& Tolerance Sponsor: Teaching Tolerance Respect & Tolerance Essay Contest Have the winning essay read at an event or over morning announcements. Share on social media with #NYVPW Mix It Up! Eat lunch with someone new, and learn about each other! Sponsor Spotlight Sample Activities to Embrace Differences Experience History Identify examples of respect and lack of respect for others in history and literature. April 6th: Resolve Conflicts Peacefully Sponsor: GLSEN Think Before You Speak Conduct an activity regarding homophobic or racial words. Research shows these slurs are often unintentional when used by teens. Mediate This! Establish a peer mediation program where youth learn how to identify triggers, active listening skills, and how to talk differences out. PSA Create a public service announcement on peaceful conflict management. Establish Fight Free Days Reward students who can go so many days fight free with a small reward such as ice cream or early release. For more information visit April 5th: Manage Your Anger Sponsor: American Academy of Pediatrics Don t let anger heat you up! Provide students with free hot chocolate or fireballs with the above phrase attached. Pledge to be Fight Free Create and sign fight free or bully free pledges. Share on social media with #NYVPW. Perform Role Plays or Skits Illustrate positive ways to deal with difficult situations such as bullying and peer pressure. Exercise the Anger Away Use physical exercise to release anger and stress. April 7th: Support Safety Sponsor: STRYVE Action Council actioncouncil.html Poster Contest Conduct a safety themed poster contest. Share posters on social media with #NYVPW. Take Action Explore Opportunities for Action to help prevent youth violence (see SAVE website for link). Safety Fair Coordinate a safety fair with exhibits and activities involving local safety officials and agencies. School Safety Committee Volunteer to serve on a school safety committee and encourage accurate incident reporting. April 8th: Unite in Action Sponsor: Youth Service America Unite in Service! Organize a service project where youth and adults come together and make a difference. Peace Murals Paint a peace mural over graffiti or host a peace themed sidewalk art event. Share art on social media with #NYVPW. Runaway Resource Work with community agencies to create a Resource for Runaways card for your community. Include numbers and safe locations where they can get help. Be A Buddy Pair adults or youth mentors with other youth for positive role models and positive peer activities.

4 How Can I Help? Adopt a school and donate educational resources that teach young people strategies to reduce violence Check Out our sponsor s websites to learn about who they are and how they support NYVPW efforts Conduct workshops and share tips, lesson plans, and ideas for preventing youth violence Connect with others to collaborate on the campaign and refer them to the campaign website for more information Create awareness through PSAs, posters, and social media by sharing activities for NYVPW using #NYVPW and #violencefree Donate your time, talent, energy, and resources to help with events throughout the week Encourage local media coverage of campaign events Invite local legislators to participate in NYVPW and ask them to officially recognize the event Join/create a local roundtable in your community to formulate strategies to reduce youth violence Reach Out to members in our sponsors organizations (School counselors, teachers, school, social workers, etc.) Send letters to your local, state, and national representatives to ask them to support the campaign Subscribe to the SAVE free monthly newsletter (e-source) to stay up to date on opportunities to support the NYVPW campaign Wear violence prevention ribbons and hang NYVPW posters to demonstrate your support for For more information on awareness activities and the Community Wheel visit
