1 June 18, 2013 Tuesday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Alcohol Dependency and Chemical Dependence, Part I Trainer: Isabel Yanez June 19, 2013 The two day substance abuse training will cover current theories and causes of addiction, types of addictions and behaviors, trauma, and co occurring disorders. The training will explore the difference in working with adults and adolescents. In addition to gaining knowledge on the spectrum of addiction, the training will include working with different populations, including women, and culturally diverse groups. Focus will be made on diverse teens from foster and group home, the juvenile justice system, and LBGT adolescents. Special emphasis will be made on utilizing culturally, gender and age responsive types of interventions including harm reduction and strength based approaches. Isabel S. Perez Yanez, MPH, CHES is a consultant and statewide trainer with over 20 years of direct and administrative experience in public health, education, and social services. She has worked in the areas of violence (gang and domestic), prevention and intervention, diverse populations, adolescent issues, perinatal health, substance abuse and diverse family issues. She has taught in the Masters of Social Work Program at California State University East Bay (CSUEB), and at the College of San Mateo, in the Alcohol and Other Drug Certificate Program. Her specialty has been teaching about the complex issues related to substance abuse and being culturally responsive in working with diverse populations. She has conducted statewide trainings for UC Davis, State Corrections, and ONTRACK Program Resources, Culturally & Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Program. As a consultant she conducts technical assistance to counties and programs on being more culturally responsive in services. This training counts as credit for the BBS requirement of training in Alcoholism and Chemical Dependency for7.5 hours. It includes the perspectives of all parties involved including the pimp culture, the children who are exploited, and the communities that are impacted by human trafficking both locally and nationally. The Life examines how the economy of human trafficking and provides the opportunity for participants to gain a better understanding of how our cultural views on wealth, gender and race contribute to the perpetuation of human trafficking. From a clinical perspective, the Life empowers participants who serve youth with refreshing perspectives and tools in which to interact and help heal their clients. Outcomes: Identify and understand cultural and personal myths about the Life Gain an understanding of the risk factors for youth to be recruited Gain an understanding and tools to counter recruitment strategies Gain an understanding for indicators that a youth is involved in the life Learn how our culture can be an instrument of desensitization regarding CSEC and learn strategies to counteract this process Gain an understanding for how Post traumatic Stress Disorder manifests in participants in the Life from pimps to child prostitutes Learn basic strategies for interacting with CSEC in both a clinical and non clinical environment Learn strategies that assist with vicarious trauma from working with CSEC Dr. Rachel Chapple is a post doctoral fellow serving youth and families who engage in suicidal and/or self harming behaviors providing Dialectical Behavioral Therapy at Clearwater Clinic in Oakland. Taube received his J.D. from Villanova University in 1985 and his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Hahnemann University in 1987, as a member of the Hahnemann/Villanova Joint Psychology and Law Graduate Program. He is a Professor at the California School of Professional Psychology, San Francisco at Alliant International University, past Psy.D. 5 July 10, 2013 Continued Research studies have found EFT to be effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD. Participants will learn and practice how to use EFT to address symptoms of PTSD with adolescents. Participants will: understand how EFT works to relieves symptoms of trauma and PTSD; determine when clients are ready to utilize EFT to address trauma incidents; prepare clients who are not ready to use EFT to address traumatic experiences and apply their knowledge of EFT techniques to design and use interventions that address the symptoms of traumatic experiences and PTSD with adults. Rachel B. Michaelsen, LCSW, is a clinical social worker who has worked with traumatized individuals, provided supervision to helping professionals who work with traumatized populations and has taught classes to supervisors on supervising trauma work and addressing vicarious traumatization. She is a Diplomate in Comprehensive Energy Psychology through the Association of Comprehensive Energy Psychology and uses Energy Psychology in her psychotherapy practice in Oakland, CA. In this training we will look at self soothing gestures, a variety of primal or archetypic gestural sequences, and other gestural repertoires that can potentially support self regulation in clients. Gabriel Kram, is the founder of Applied Mindfulness, Inc. He has produced 2 mindfulnessbased interventions that are being scaled into new national models; one in juvenile justice and the other in adolescent trauma recovery. He is the author of Transformation through Feeling: Awakening the Felt Sensibility, and Inner Life Skills for Youth.
