3 RELAY FOR LIFE BACKGROUND The American Cancer Society s Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. For 100+ years, the American Cancer Society has been leading the way to transform cancer from deadly to preventable. At Relay, teams of people camp out in the McPhee Olson Physical Education Center and take turns walking around the track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays can be overnight, our event will last from 7pm 4am.

4 WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? Cancer Research 47 ACS funded researchers have won a Nobel Prize Patient Support Hope Lodge, Look Good Feel Better, Road to Recovery Prevention Info/Education Cancer screenings, healthy lifestyle Detection and Treatment Information Services, programs and service

7 RELAY CEREMONIES Opening Ceremony 7pm Celebrate The Survivor s Lap immediately following Opening Survivors circle the track together as they take the first lap Remember The Luminaria Ceremony 10pm Honor those who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost Fight Back The Closing Ceremony 4am Everyone makes a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer

8 WHAT WE ASK OF RELAY: Represent a cancer Host an onsite fundraiser Bring a team auction item/basket

9 REPRESENTING A CANCER Relay is not only for raising funds to fight cancer but to also help spread awareness of different types of cancer. The night of Relay have a poster board with: Have a poster at your campsite explaining general information: What is it? Who normally gets diagnosed with it? Is it generally caused by something (smoking lung cancer) Is there a suggestion for frequency of screenings? Please use cancer.org for your information! Next meeting you will be letting us know what you picked to represent!

10 ONSITE FUNDRAISER Can be anything just needs to be approved by us! Please no glitter All teams will be picked in a random order and tell us what your onsite fundraiser will be at the next meeting We do not allow doubles as to not allow competition at Relay Please come with at least 3 ideas IF two teams feel very strongly about their idea teams should talk about possible collaboration You and your team can host an event at Relay too! Based on first come first served basis. Minute to win it games, karaoke, lip sync contest, bingo, sporting tournament, musical chairs scavenger hunt, etc. Please let us know asap if you are interested in this!

13 RELAY TEAM CHALLENGE New point system for teams to earn rewards!! Top team will automatically be receiving a team prize 3-5 teams to receive pizza the night of Relay How is this done? For every 100 points you receive you name will be placed in a drawing Drawing will be done at Relay

14 FUND THE MISSION CHALLENGE Your school has 72 hours to go all in to help fund the American Cancer Society s mission and become one of the top campus Relay For Life events in the nation! Competing are all collegiate and high school Relay For Life events in the country to see who can come out on top. The challenge begins Tuesday, February 21 at 12 a.m. CST and ends Thursday, February 23 at 11:59 p.m. CST. On top of the amazing title of being a top campus Relay For Life event, we ve got great prizes! We are giving away branded inflatable dancing man for the campus event with the highest YOY% increase as of February branded inflatable dancing man for the top college event in online fundraising February branded inflatable dancing man for the top high school event in online fundraising February Beats wireless headphones for the top campus individual in online fundraising February

15 SURVIVORSHIP A survivor is defined as anyone who has heard the words you have cancer Each team that has a survivor registered on their team will receive 50 points for the team point challenge While your survivor is more than welcome to join us on April 28 th, they do not need to attend in order to receive a survivor shirt (they will be in your team bag to deliver to your survivor-must be registered) We will recognize all survivors in the survivor reception as well as during the survivor lap that will immediately follow the opening ceremony All survivors can register for free!
