7 HUJ Koriun 19A, Yerevan, VOLUNTARY SERVICE Armenia, 0009 OF ARMENIA Tel: Fax: EVS Project Armenia Tree project Duration: 6-9 months Local community Armenia Tree Project Based in Watertown and Yerevan, ATP conducts vitally important environmental projects in Armenia s impoverished and deforested zones and seeks support in advancing its reforestation mission. Since 1994, ATP has made enormous strides in combating desertification in the biologically diverse but threatened Caucasus region. Over 1,250,000 trees have been planted and restored, and hundreds of jobs have been created for Armenians in seasonal tree-regeneration programs. ATP works to further Armenia s economic and social development by mobilizing resources to fund reforestation. These vital new trees provide food, wood, environmental benefits, and opportunities for economic growth. Our goal is to assist the Armenian people in using trees to improve their standard of living and protect the global environment. In so doing, we are guided by the need to promote self-sufficiency, aid those with the fewest resources first, and conserve the indigenous ecosystem. What we do: Community Tree Planting and Rural Reforestation Armenia s estimated forest cover is less than 8 percent of its territory, a dramatic decrease from a healthy 25 percent forest cover at the turn of the 20th century. ATP is working to reverse deforestation by implementing programs to restore degraded and lost forest areas. In addition, ATP helps to revitalize urban and rural communities, by working in partnership with residents to plant trees at parks, public institutions and other sites throughout Armenia that have been severely depleted of greenery. Community Development and Poverty Reduction Armenia s ecosystem is in grave jeopardy. Currently 70 percent of cut timber is used for heating purposes due to unavailability of alternate fuel sources. If this trend continues, Armenia will turn into a desert wasteland in an estimated 20 years. In response, ATP combines reforestation with locally based poverty reduction efforts in order to protect existing resources and investments in the future. Environmental Education and Advocacy By actively engaging youth and the general public in a process to better understand and appreciate the value of a healthy and sustainable environment, ATP seeks to protect the trees we plant today from future exploitation. The public school system in Armenia does not have an environmental education component in its curriculum, so ATP designed a curriculum that will be introduced to the Ministry of Education for consideration as a mandatory teaching tool for primary through secondary school students.

8 Objectives and motivation The main aim of the project is to work in Armenia Tree project office, helping them in all their projects. The volunteer will be involved in all programs and will be encouraged to propose his/her own ideas and suggestions. Apart from working with the ecology, he/she will have the possibility to spend time with schoolchildren and students organizing workshops about environmental education and necessity of the environment. Volunteer tasks The volunteer will participate in most activities organized by the office: The volunteer will have the opportunity to participate in all workshops and to support the staff in organizing these activities (in schools, universities etc.) He/she will establish social contact with individual children and their parents by chats and games. The volunteer will work directly with children in different areas concerning daily life The volunteer will learn about our cultures and traditions, and will learn our language. The volunteer will take active part in the following projects: Community Tree Planting and Rural Reforestation Community Development and Poverty Reduction Environmental Education and Advocacy Support and training will be provided by the staff of the organization and by the community. The volunteer will be invited to social events and will be supported in learning and practicing basic Armenian or Russian language, according to his/her wish. The volunteer will be encouraged to present a personal project which he/she could carry out, depending on their skills and interests. The volunteer will work 5 days per week (approx. 30 hours) and will have weekends off. Recruitment There are no gender, age and other requirements for the selection/recruitment of volunteers.
