Critical Care Solutions from the 3M Cavilon Professional Skin Care Products Family TM Skin Protection for the critically ill Why is Skin Damage a Significant Problem? Skin damage constitutes a negative clinical outcome and a poor patient experience Healing potential is significantly compromised (1) and skin damage has the potential to create serious consequences, such as infection Skin damage increases the cost of care So, prevention makes sense!
Incontinence Moisture Increased Friction Increased Shear Critical Care Patients are at High Risk for Skin Damage % of ICU patients were found to have a pressure ulcer (2) Incontinence is a risk factor in the development of pressure ulcers» Moisture on the skin increases friction and friction is a component of shear, which can contribute to pressure ulcer formation Fecal incontinence and diarrhea are common in the critical care setting» Patients with fecal incontinence are 22 times more likely to develop a pressure ulcer (3)» 36 95% of ICU patients were found to have Incontinence- Associated Dermatitis (IAD) (4,5) Increased Risk of PU Formation Other significant sources of skin damage: Adhesive damage associated with central venous catheter care and negative pressure wound therapy Moisture associated skin damage from oral secretions, wound drainage, perspiration, edema or leaking tubes/devices Friction damage from restlessness, immobility or obesity Preventing Skin Breakdown Improves Clinical Outcomes and Can Save Budget Dollars
Create and Implement an Effective Skin Damage Prevention Protocol with a Unique Skin Care Product! 3M Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film is an alcohol-free moisture barrier. Its unique formulation contains polymers that form a waterproof, protective coating to protect the skin from body fluids, adhesives and friction. It is breathable and transparent allowing for continuous visualization and monitoring of skin. It is flexible and conforms to the skin during movement or position changes. Fragrance-free, preservative-free and latex-free (6) Hypoallergenic (6) Non-cytotoxic (6) can be used on intact and damaged skin (7, 8) Cost effective Compatible with chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) and povidone iodine (6) Unique Formulation of not one but two polymers: Terpolymer + Silicone Homopolymer = Effective Flexible Barrier The additional polymer enables the film to flex with the skin and helps to maintain a continuous protective coating. Other barrier films contain only one polymer and some utilize alcohol as a solvent. With Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film you can be confident that you have an effective barrier and excellent patient comfort. Evidence-based There are over 70 pieces of clinical evidence (9) supporting the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film for multiple clinical uses, including prevention and treatment of IAD. This represents more evidence than any other moisture barrier or barrier film.
3M Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film: Versatile to Meet Multiple Skin Protection Needs Friction damage from respiratory devices Skin stripping from tape used to secure endotracheal tubes Skin stripping from adhesives: central line dressings Damage to skin around mouth (or tracheostomy) from saliva/secretions Damage in skin folds from moisture and friction Damage around tubes or leaking drains Friction over elbows Moisture lesions over sacrococcygeal area/buttocks Skin stripping from adhesives: NPWT, tapes, dressings, ostomy pouches Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis Damage around fixators/pins Damage from wound exudate or ostomy drainage Friction damage over heels In one simple application, Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film can help you prevent damage from friction, body fluids and adhesive trauma.
Prevention of IAD if Creams Are Preferred 3M Cavilon Durable Barrier Cream is an effective choice to help prevent IAD. It is a unique moisturizing barrier cream that is breathable and vanishes into the skin. This prevents clogging of briefs (10) and absorbent products and allows easy visualization of the skin. Proven wash-off resistance (11) Allows tapes and adhesive to stick to the skin (6) Skin friendly hypoallergenic and ph balanced (6) Compatible with chlorhexidine gluconate (6) Ask for Cavilon Durable Barrier Cream Cavilon Durable Barrier Cream is like no other barrier cream 1) Unique formulation of 3M polymers and dimethicone for skin protection, as well as skin conditioning ingredients for moisturization: Polymers + Dimethicone = Long Lasting Protection Unlike typical products used for IAD prevention, Cavilon Durable Barrier Cream is both durable and concentrated. This means it lasts longer, you use less than typical creams or ointments, and it allows adhesives to adhere! 2) Evidence-based, with over 16 pieces of clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of Cavilon Durable Barrier Cream. (12) With Cavilon Durable Barrier Cream you can be confident that you are providing evidence-based care. Skin Care Made Easy For Incontinence Use Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film when: skin is damaged/broken skin is intact, but risk of damage is high (e.g. frequent or continuous diarrhea) protection from friction is desired Use Cavilon Durable Barrier Cream when: skin is intact and normal in color skin is intact with light/mild erythema P PREVENTION P TREATMENT Reapply every 24 hours For patients at higher risk of skin damage (e.g. constant diarrheal stooling) more frequent applications (every 12 hours) may be necessary Reapply every 8 24 hours, depending on the frequency of incontinence P PREVENTION For Other Skin Protection Needs Use Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film: Under adhesive dressings, tapes, or devices reapply each time the dressing and/or adhesive product is changed For peritube and periwound protection reapply every 24 hours or as needed
