1 The Science of Global Prostate Cancer Conference in Black Men Dear Prospective Conference Partner: On behalf of the Technical Planning Committee Chairs for the SGCaPD conference, we are excited to announce an opportunity for you to partner with us on the 2 nd Biennial Science of Global Prostate Cancer Disparities conference scheduled for November 1 November 4, 2012 in Nassau, The Bahamas. Please consider partnering with us by supporting delegates from your institution to participate in the conference. Partnership with academic institutions, cancer centers, hospitals, national cancer organizations, and community-based organization in low-resource/developing countries will be an important part of our conference s success and provide added value to our attendees. The partnership prospectus for the conference is attached for your consideration. As you are aware, prostate cancer continues to be a major public health problem for Black men in both industrialized and developing countries worldwide. While significant progress has been made in understanding the genetics, behavioral and environmental risk factors for prostate cancer, there is limited progress in closing the prostate cancer disparity gap for Black men within and outside the US. Our preliminary observations and that of others point to the fact that global collaborations among prostate cancer scientists, clinicians, survivors and advocates are important to understand the etiology of prostate cancer among at-risk Black men, and develop effective interventions to address prostate cancer disparities. Through our biennial conference, we continue to address the current challenges that threaten global collaborations including, limited resources in lowresource countries and limited support for face-to-face meetings and sharing of research results. With delegates from North America, South America, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean, the SGCaPD conference is a landmark effort to continue to address the global burden of prostate cancer in Black men. The conference will attract national and international scientists, clinicians, community leaders, prostate cancer survivors, prostate cancer advocates and other urological professionals. 4 CONFERENCE INFORMATION The Science of Global Prostate Cancer Disparities in Black men conference will be held on November 1-4, 2012 at the Super Club Breezes Resort in Nassau, Bahamas. The conference is jointly sponsored by the University of Florida and the University on West Indies in the Bahamas. There is significant collaborative support for the conference through several national and international organizations, including the: National Cancer Institute; Prostate Cancer Transatlantic Collaborative (CaPTC); African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC); African-Caribbean Cancer Consortium (AC3); Men of African Descent and Carcinoma of the Prostate Consortium (MADCaP); US Too Bahamas Chapter; The Central Florida Pharmacy Council (CFPC); The Prostate Net ; and The Tanzania 50 Plus campaign. The conference will attract national and international scientists, clinicians, community leaders, prostate cancer survivors, prostate cancer advocates and other urological professionals.
