The SAR value shows soluble sodium is adequately balanced by calcium and magnesium. Salinity (ECe), sodium, boron and chloride are all higher than preferred for most plants, particularly for sensitive plants such as seedlings and transplants. Several thorough leaching irrigations with a minimum of 3 to 4 inches of good quality water low in salts and boron are recommended in order to decrease the salinity, sodium, chloride and boron to a safer range. Organic content measured by loss on ignition at 16.8% dry weight is abundant and will assist greatly with respect to water and nutrient retention characteristics. Texture of the mix appeared quite favorable. Immediately available nitrogen is low and calcium and iron are fair. Potassium and sulfate are extremely abundant and the leaching irrigations will help decrease the potassium to a more preferable range. Gypsum incorporation is recommended in order to help improve the calcium level. Gypsum should be incorporated at a rate of 3 pounds per cubic yard of material before leaching irrigations are applied. The other required nutrients are in normal ranges to support healthy plant growth. After leaching has been completed, nitrogen will be the first nutrient that requires supplementing. This should be applied at the time of planting. If conventional fertilizer will be used a good option would be Ammonium Sulfate (21-0-0) at a rate of 5 pounds per 1000 square feet with reapplication every days or as plant color and growth dictates. If an organic program will be utilized, then in order to provide a good supply of nitrogen for a 3-4 month time frame a good combination would be 8 pounds Blood Meal and 16 pounds Feather Meal per 1000 square feet.
