Drug-nutrient and nutrient-nutrient interactions important to metabolism will be covered. Perspectives on the subject matter will evolve from the cellular and molecular level to whole body integration of metabolism. Opportunities will be provided for independent study, knowledge evaluation and self-selection of course content. NOTE: You do not attend class on Independent Study Days but instead complete the Independent Study Assignments provided to ensure that you have the background knowledge expected as prerequisite for the new course material. Canada: Wadsworth/Thomson Learning 3 rd ed (diagrams used in teaching will be primarily from this textbook) Voet D and Voet JG. Biochemistry. 2 nd Edition John Wiley & Sons Inc., N.Y Voet D, Voet JG, Pratt CW. Fundamentals of Biochemistry. John Wiley & Sons Inc., NY a list is attached of Figures and Tables from these texts that will be used in the lectures and for which you are responsible for tests. 1

BCH 3N3 Binder will contain answers and marking schemes for Term test and special review papers if used as resources for lectures. (2 copies ON RESERVE in library). 3. CDs on Nutrition available for use in HSC Library (A/V section). - McNUTrition (developed at McMaster) - Nutrition in Medicine Series (Univ. Of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) - the CDs on Nutritional Anemias, Diet, Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease and Nutrition in Cancer will be most useful for the course content. 4. Mid-term test 1 (Feb 12) Lectures 1-16 = 25% 2. Assignment (given out Feb.23 - due for hand-in = 25% and presentation April 1 st ) 3. Final Exam - Lectures 1-36 = 50% For final marks, percentage grades will be rounded to the nearest integer and converted to a final letter grade using the conversion scale in the undergraduate calendar. You will be informed if any changes to the evaluation format become necessary. Assignment: Critical Appraisal of Current Topic in Nutrition The assignment will consist of a critical appraisal of the current scientific literature on a topic of interest related to nutrition and metabolism. A choice of selected papers to review will be provided. Guidelines for critical appraisal of a scientific paper can be found in: (Groff/Gropper 3 rd edition, Chapter 17, Experimental Design and Critical Interpretation of Research). This chapter is recommended reading prior to starting the assignment. The class will be divided into small groups each with a preceptor assigned (either one of the 2

3 professors or Teaching Assistants). Group work on the assignment will take place via Learn Link. The paper and presentation will be a group effort. Students will be marked for participation on Learn Link. Further details of the assignment will be discussed in class. Self-Evaluation: 1) Assignments for Independent Study Days are provided for you to consolidate your previous knowledge of nutritional biochemistry prior to delving into the more applied topic areas that will be covered in the lectures. The assignments for each Independent Study Day will be available on Learnlink. 2) A Problems Tutorial will be held on two occasions. Problem sets will be available in advance of the Tutorial on LearnLink. The Problem Questions provided will help you to self-test your understanding of the course material and to practice for the type of exam questions used in this course. To obtain the greatest benefit from these exercises, you must prepare answers to the problems and then attend the class in which the Teaching Assistants will review the answers. The Problems Tutorial will also be an opportunity to review the Independent Study assignments if you have questions. University Policy Exams and Academic Dishonesty 1. You must bring student I.D. to all tests/exams. 2. Absence from a test or exam will result in an automatic zero unless evidence can be provided for medical or legal conflicts. If you know ahead of time that you re going to be absent during a time when a test is scheduled then you must notify the REGISTRAR S OFFICE as soon as possible. 3. You may use a non-programmable calculator during any of the tests/exams. 4. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Please refer to the Statement on academic ethics and the Senate resolutions on academic dishonesty found in the Senate policy statements as distributed by the Senate office. Plagiarism of your classmate s work (be it from this year or previous years), or any text from books, the web, tests or papers, is unacceptable conduct and is subject to penalty if observed by the course professor or assistants. 3
