2 Background Introduction According to data collected by Chinese customs, from January to June of 2014, the volume of olive oil exported to China was around tones with a value of 70 million dollars. The majority of exports come from Spain, Italy, Turkey, Tunisia and Greece. Besides, domestic enterprises like Wilmar China and COFCO are growing fast, making the market more competitive. Additionally it has to be mentioned that the consumption of olive oil in China is limited to specific higher earning group. It is distinguished from other vegetable oil markets as a premium product. The main barrier of exporting olive oil to China is lack of understanding of the related regulations Hojiblanca, one of the biggest manufacturers and exporters of olive oil in the world excels at removing these barriers by having a China specific production strategy. Hojiblanca produces made for China products by changing its manufacturing processes to make products compliant with relevant regulations in China. Manuel Lopez, the APAC manager form Hojiblanca, said that olive oil plays a dominate role in Western Food but not in Chinese food. How to make it acceptable on the Chinese dinner table is a major difficult. Currently, China is experiencing growth in olive oil consumption rates particularly in more developed regions like Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. Market analysis based on classification Imported olive oil is classified into 3 categories based on the customs commodity list (Table 1). The tax rate, declaration, regulations and inspection are different in each category. The details can be referred to appendix 1. Differences can be seen among imports of each category of olive oil. The market was shared among the three categories, while virgin olive oil takes up the biggest share of China market suggesting that the virgin olive oil ( ) is accepted by most of Chinese customers. Worldwide, Spain was the main exporter with more than half of the market share. The second-largest exporter was Italy with an average around of around 26%.
