Pharmacy Math Skills Self-Assessment for Incoming P1 Students (Please allow 50 minutes and no calculators) A similar assessment will be given during the P1 orientation week as part of the course requirement for PHAR 3122 Pharmacy Calculations. For passing, students need to answer at least 21 questions correctly out of a total of 25 questions in 50 minutes without a calculator. Answer Keys If you miss any questions, please be sure to review the topics over the summer. You can use your own study materials from your previous courses. Below are two free online resources with useful video instructions on some topics. Math Antics: Khan Academy: (use the search function to help you narrow down the choices) Order of operations: = = 6 Fractions, decimals, percentages, and scientific notation: = 7 8 (provide the answer as a fraction in its simplest form) 4. You are a compounding pharmacist and need to prepare a script of 12 rectal suppositories. If the formula for each suppository consists of 1 gram of drug and 1 5 grams of cocoa butter 3 6 base. What is the total weight in grams for 12 suppositories? Answer: 26 g Page 1 of 6

= 50 3 or (provide the answer as a fraction in its simplest form) 6. Convert 1 8 to a decimal expression and a percent expression: and 12.5% 7. Convert 0.073% to a decimal expression, a fraction expression, and a scientific notation expression: , , and Algebraic equations, exponentials, and logarithms: 8. Solve for x: 1 x + 8 = 2(3x 7) x = A female patient had an annual check-up at the doctor s office. Her weight and height measurements are 80 kilograms and 65 inches. The formula of ideal body weight (IBW) for females is 45.5 kg kg for each inch of patient height over 60 inches. What is the IBW for this patient? Answer: 57 kg 45.5 kg + (2.3 kg/inch) (65 inch 60 inch) = 57 kg 10. If 2ac + 5 = b, what is the expression for c? Answer: c = b 5 2a Page 2 of 6

11. Write a valid equation for eight more than the product of x and 5 equals 29. Answer: 8 + 5x = If x = 3, y = 4, and z = 7, 2x 3 + 8y 1 2 z 0 = Simplify: a2 b c 4 d d2 = a2 b 3 d b 2 c 3 c The ph value of a solution is calculated as: ph = log 10 [H + ], where [H + ] is the hydrogen ion concentration in mol/liter. If the typical stomach fluid ph is 2, what is the hydrogen ion concentration in the stomach fluid? Answer: 10 2 or 0.01 mol/liter (the unit can also be expressed as molar or M) From the given formula, we can derive that [H + ] = 10 ph When ph = 2, [H + ] = 10 2 = 0.01 mol/liter Page 3 of 6

Ratio and proportion: 15. On a map, 1 inch = 4 miles. Alex and Grant were on a quest to find the cure for arithmophobia, the fear of numbers. You see on the map that they traveled 2 inch on Day 1 and 3 inches on Day 2. How many miles did they travel in total? Answer: 20 miles 4 mile = x 1 inch (2+3) inch Solve for x, and x = 20 mile Alternative solution by dimensional analysis: 4 mile (2 inch + 3 inch) = 20 mile 1 inch 16. If 2 tablets contain 50 mg hydrochlorothiazide, how many tablets do you need to have a total of 2000 mg hydrochlorothiazide? Answer: 80 tablets 50 mg 2 tablet = 2000 mg x Solve for x, and x = 80 tablet Alternative solution by dimensional analysis: 2 tablet 50 mg 2000 mg = 80 tablet 17. If an eye drop bottle contains 3 mg drug in a total of 10 ml solution, how many milligrams of drug are contained in 0.1 ml solution? Answer: 0.03 mg 3 mg = x 10 ml 0.1 ml Solve for x, and x = 0.03 mg Alternative solution by dimensional analysis: 3 mg 0.1 ml = 0.03 mg 10 ml Page 4 of 6

Word problems involving percent: 18. The population of America is about 300 million, and an estimated 15 million Americans are living with a rare disease. What is the percentage of Americans living with a rare disease? Answer: 5% % = 5% 19. The St. John Fisher College football team played 120 games over the past 10 seasons and won 60% of those games. How many games did they win? Answer: % = A coupon for Xarelto, a medication for blood clots, gives the patients 20% off the copay. If the copay for a patient is $40.00, how much is the patient going to pay with the coupon? Answer: $32 $40 (1 20%) = $ Last month, a patient paid $20.00 copay for his monthly supply of metoprolol, a blood pressure medication. This month, it looks like the insurance company has raised the copay to $ Express the increase of copay as a percentage. Answer: 15% % = 15% Page 5 of 6

Concentration and metric system: 22. A pharmacist dissolved 0.2 g drug in 0.5 L water. What is the drug concentration in µg/ml? Answer: 400 µg/ml 0.2 g = µg, 0.5 L = 500 ml; μg 500 ml = 400 μg/ml Alternative solution by dimensional analysis: 400 μg/ml 0.2 g 0.5 L 1000 mg 1 g 1000 μg 1 mg 1 L 1000 ml = 23. A student diluted 100 ml of a 20 mg/ml drug solution with saline to a total of 1 L. What is the new drug concentration? Answer: 2 mg/ml (100 ml)(20 mg/ml) 1000 ml = 2 mg/ml Alternative solution by C1V1=C2V2: (20 mg/ml)(100 ml)=(c2)(1000 ml) Solve for C2, and C2 = 2 mg/ml Significant figures and rounding: 24. For each of the following, state the number of significant figures: a Answer: 4 b Answer: 2 c Answer: 3 d Answer: 3 e Answer: For each of the following, round to three significant figures: a Answer: 1.34 b Answer: c Answer: 4.13 d Answer: e Answer: Page 6 of 6
