1 Supplement Categories In this section, we will begin to explain the Metabolomic Academy method of Nutritional Medicine. The step taken by metabolomic studies was to identify seven categories of major nutritional deficiencies (referred to as supplement intake categories), listing the indicators for their identification. As we shall see in a later section, the practitioner will identify to which supplement category the client/patient belongs and will treat him/her accordingly through nutrition and appropriate supplements. The treatment must be conducted on a gradual basis to avoid therapeutic crisis, adding within a few months the necessary supplements up to a maintenance regimen. The first step is to acquire the necessary knowledge of supplement intake categories and their identification procedure. 1

2 SUMMARY VIDEO SUPPLEMENT INTAKE CATEGORIES Category 1 Nutritional Deficiencies Basic principle: there are 2 reasons why a human body, designed to be healthy, falls ill: - Damages occur faster and repairs; - The body lacks nutrients to create new tissue and repair the damage. Almost everyone needs a multivitamin supplement because of deficiencies in the food we eat. Causes are widespread and include excess of processed food, depletion of minerals in the soil, pollution, stressful life and so on. A good supplement should also contain digestive enzymes, free form amino acids and herbal extracts. Harvard recommends everyone a daily intake of these sorts of supplements. All patients analysed via metabolomic studies have shown the need to take a metabolomic supplement, which has been developed to provide all necessary nutrients. Anybody presenting this sort of nutritional deficiencies. Each prescription must contain a multivitamin complex as specified above - ideally a metabolomic supplement. 2

3 Category 2 Oxidation/Toxicity Once the body has been provided with sufficient nutrients, the next priority is helping it repair the damage. This is a natural activity that we can favour with natural antioxidants such as vitamin C (natural), Resveratrol, Pycnogenol, Acerola, Bioflavonoids, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Quercetin and many others. - In principle, anyone can benefit from antioxidant intake. - All people with chronic diseases. Any disorder lasting over three months can be considered a chronic disease. Chronic diseases create a strong oxidation in the body and put the body's natural antioxidant mechanisms under severe stress. Take balanced antioxidants substances. Possibly using metabolomic supplements that contain other factors beyond antioxidants, which increase absorption and effectiveness. 3

4 Category 3 Amino acid Deficiencies Amino acids are relevant because they are the basic building block for tissues, enzymes, antibodies, etc. Thus, rebuilding our skin, bones and muscles demands amino acids. Importantly, amino acids must be taken in the free form and not tied together with proteins, as normally happens in feeding. If our body were in such good condition as to be able to digest proteins and provide all the necessary amino acids, we might not require supplements. Unfortunately, large scale metabolomic analysis has evidenced that this is rarely the case. The lack of certain amino acids results in a shortfall in enzyme production - including digestive ones. This further worsens the amino acids deficiency in a vicious circle. People under physical or emotional stress, management personnel, people convalescent after illness or hospitalisation. Take supplements containing 20 amino acids in free form ( not bound to protein) and easily digestible. 4

5 Category 4 Metabolic Syndrome/Obesity/Overweight Metabolic syndrome and overweight essentially arise from the same problem, i.e. a high levels of insulin and leptin hormones due to metabolic stress caused by nutritional deficiencies. The origin of this disorder is associated with high intake of processed food as sugar and refined carbohydrates combined with lack of exercise. These facts cause an increase in blood sugar and, subsequently, the appearance of cells resistant to insulin and leptin, i.e. cells "deaf" to the stimuli of both hormones. The consequent reduction of intracellular glucose causes further metabolic stress that worsens the clinical picture. Obese or overweight individuals. Persons with high blood sugar. take supplements to keep low blood sugar: Vit. D, K2, magnesium, chromium, zinc, Glutamine, Cinnamon 5

6 Category 5 Excessive Reaction to Stress: In a state of emotional or physical stress of long duration, the body reacts with abundant secretion of catecholamines (adrenaline, cortisol, and dopamine). This causes disruption of the hormonal balance (insulin resistance and inadequate secretion of steroids). At its base, there is often a low efficiency of the body's energy production cycle (citric acid cycle or "Krebs cycle") This condition is accompanied by a decrease in metabolism (possible hypothyroidism, fat accumulation, increased production of estrogen through aromatases) Those suffering from insomnia, metabolic stress, or hormonal disorders. Women suffering from hot flashes. Men suffering from emotional stress and prostate disorders (imbalance of testosterone) There are herbs called adaptogens, which help the body balance its energy level. They are neither tranquilisers nor stimulants but still help the body function properly. 6

7 Category 6 Inflammation Inflammation as such is not a problem of the body but rather its reaction to repair certain damage. We need fatty acids (also amino acids) so that the body completes successfully the inflammation processes. Generally speaking, omega- 6s promote inflammation (impede conclusion, so the processes keeps going on longer than it should) while omega- 3s do the opposite. There are 4 main types of food fat: - Omega 3: contained in fish oil; - Omega 6: contained in vegetable oil; - Omega 9: mainly extracted from olive oil; - Saturated: meat from animals. Nowadays, the typical Western diet is strongly biased towards omega 6 fatty acids, contains lots of saturated fat but lacks omega 3. A healthy diet should have an omega 3 vs. 6 ratio of 1:1. Instead, it is typically 1:16 or even worse. Anybody can benefit from omega 3 intake, due to diet imbalances. Those subject to inflammatory processes, namely: - Rubor (redness); - Tumor (swelling); - Dolor (pain); - Calor (heat); 7

8 - Functio laesa (functional impairment). A process of on- going inflammation becomes apparent because a part of the body, a tissue of an organ, or a cell is red, sore, swollen, and warmer in the area and loses its function. Take a balanced mix of fatty acids. Omega- 3s are the most deficient in modern diet but some varieties of omega 6 and 9 are often missing in food. A balanced mix of omega 3, 6 and 9 is preferred. 8

9 Category 7 Altered Bacterial Flora The body has 10 trillion cells alongside 100 trillion bacteria in the gut belonging to about 1,000 different species. 80% of the immune system comes from these probiotic bacteria. 95% of the genetic heritage available to the body comes from them. In fact, human DNA contains 21,000 genes in each cell but there are 3.3 million genes in probiotic bacteria. 80% of neurotransmitters are produced in the gut by bacterial flora. Gastrointestinal mucosa requires the bacterial flora to remain impermeable and absorb nutrients. Intestinal flora produces essential nutrients to human life as vit. K2, B7, and Biotin. For this reason, it is very important to keep it in good conditions. Even in this case, however, the usual dietary habits, the shortcomings of food and various other factors relating to the person's lifestyle hardly favour healthy flora. Any person suffering from dyspepsia, abdominal distension, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, chronic fatigue, or headaches. Also people with allergies and food intolerance present symptoms of altered bacterial flora because proteins pass undigested through the mucosa and the immune system, triggering therefore 9

10 immune reactions against proteins, which are foreign to the body. Now, given that the intestine and intestinal flora are largely responsible for neurotransmitter production, altered intestinal flora can cause nervous system dysfunctions. Similarly, a compromised bacterial flora can cause problems in the immune system. Another symptom of a compromised bacterial flora is spasmodic cravings for sugar and refined carbohydrates, which among other tend to further alter intestinal flora itself should the intake be significant and frequent. Administer a probiotics, eventually containing a wide variety thereof. Advise also to avoid simple sugars and refined carbohydrates, as these favour the growth of pathogenic bacteria. If necessary, administer l- glutamine to help recreate gastro intestinal mucosa and restore its impermeability. Upon severe disorder, pathogenic microorganisms such as candida and anaerobic bacteria can be limited using natural antiseptics like oregano, olive oil and extracts of cinnamon (which have no side effects). It is vital to drink plenty of water to favour intestinal motility and improve the environment of bacterial flora. 10
