Today, we commemorate the historic occasion when the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi as its official language on 14 th September It was this assembly that wrote the Constitution of India. The Constitution was adopted on 26 January 1950 that India commemorates as its Republic Day. In the joy of Hindi Diwas and with an intention to encourage Hindi speaking Western Australians to formally become members of HSWA, Life Membership fee has been reduced for ONE month. Please see details on page 3. I invite you and all your friends to show solidarity and a commitment towards Hindi by becoming life members of HSWA. Please spread the word, thank you. In the August issue, I requested your feedback on 'why Hindi' and other general issues with Hindi Samaj. We got some response but please keep writing. Response to the new format of newsletter has been all the way positive- especially its simplicity, objectivity and size of the file; well done, Kapil. In this issue, you will find a new section with topics on health issues. Healthy tips on health issues written by Hindi speaking medical professionals for the Hindi speaking members of HSWA makes good sense to me. I thank Dr Sanjeev Sharma for writing and Mrs Madhu Handa for editing the inaugural article. Two weeks back, I had the opportunity to meet and greet those of you who were present at the Sangam Sandhaya. It was a success greater than what we anticipated. Congratulations to the whole team especially Mrs Sudesh Aggarwal, Mrs Ashraf Iqbal and Mrs Jyotsna Chhabra but it goes without saying that the event wouldn't have been a success if you were not there. 2 Sangam Sandhya Sangam Sandhya was simply a mystically enjoyable evening! A comment we heard from many was, 'I came with a plan to leave early but the program was so gripping'. It was attended by more than 100 people from all ages while we had anticipated no more than 70! Performances were mainly songs but the moods varied from devotional to romantic and eras from 1940s through the melodies of seventies to the recent ones. It was really pleasing to see a nicely presented song by an adult student of our own Paathshala. Mrs Ashraf Iqbal, Mrs Jyotsna Chhabra and Mrs Sudesh Aggarwal had beautifully sequenced the event. Jyotsna proved a really great MC. The food was great- fresh and tasty. Kitchen was meticulously managed by Mrs Madhu Handa. Abhinav Sharma organised the PAS system and this was his first ever effort- very well done. Mr Iqbal and Mrs Loyalka captured moments in their cameras. Contact Sanjeev Narang on , Paathashala (Hindi School) We welcome Mrs Rubi Grewal Sharma as our new teacher to Paathshala, as she has taken up the role of adult s Hindi teacher. At these classes, adults and young adults come together to learn Hindi on Sunday mornings. The classes are a good mix of people from Indian/subcontinent origin as well as other ethnic backgrounds. The classes are vibrant and interactive where students learn Hindi through a well-designed course and discussions on Indian culture, Indian food, clothes, and Bollywood as well. Paathashala for kids is a weekend Hindi school with a difference. Here children five and above, come together to learn Hindi through lessons, singing, drama, and games. This term, children have been busy preparing a skit, which they will present at Fulwari in October. We welcome new students Hriday, Riti, Areeba, Salik and Vaishanavi to Paathashala. Children s classes are held in the afternoon. These classes are run from Subiaco. We are looking at opportunities to open a centre south of the river. 4 क य हम र आज कल क ल इफ स ट इल म व ट ममन-ड क कम एक ग भ र समस य ह? Are we ignoring the power of our Sun? Vitamin D is responsible for enhancing intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate. While it can be ingested from diet and from supplements, the body can synthesize vitamin D in the skin, from cholesterol, when sun exposure is adequate (hence its nickname, the "sunshine vitamin"). Vitamin D deficiency leads to osteomalacia and osteoporosis in adults makes bones fragile and prone to fractures. People often spend their entire day time inside sun-poor cubicles. Vitamin D intake from food is rarely adequate. As a result, one third of Australians have been found deficient in vitamin D. क य आप ज नत ह Researchers are continually trying to uncover new links between lack of vitamin D and different ailments. Low vitamin D blood levels are linked to higher risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, common cancers, muscle weakness, infections, and autoimmune disease. Major health problems are initiated or promoted by chronic and silent inflammation. Vitamin D is considered as a strong anti-ageing and disease-deterring agent, because of its anti-inflammatory effects. Research highlights an important link between vitamin D and obesity that, until now, has been largely ignored. Vitamin D deficiency contributes to decreased muscle and increased fat, which is a condition that is increasingly common in industrialised nations. Though diet also is a major factor in obesity, it is striking to see vitamin D playing a role in this condition. व ट ममन ड क कम क क स स ध र The best way to address vitamin D deficiency is to get more sunlight. But, when this is not possible, particularly throughout winter when the sun is at a lower angle and ultraviolet (UV) rays are at a minimum, supplementation with vitamin D is essential. On a typical summer day, 15 to 20 minutes of sunlight exposure will result in the skin producing about 40,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D. At this point, the mechanism that produces the vitamin shuts off in order to prevent the body from making too much. Currently, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin D is IU per day, depending on age. Recent studies are showing that these recommendations are too low to maintain optimal health.
