1 ssniff Complete feeds for rabbits and guinea pigs * Complete diets for all development and life stages Comparable to other animal species also for the breeding and rearing of guinea pigs and rabbits higher concentrations and improved availability of the crude nutrients and of the dietary energy are necessary than for the maintenance to make use of the performance potential of the animals and to keep them in a good health status in the long-term. From the nutritional point of view that implies a differentiation between both breeding/rearing on the one hand and maintenance on the other hand to avoid undersupply (emaciation, impaired breeding performance or oversupply (adiposity, reduced lifespan. ssniff has developed specific feedingstuffs for each life stage, so that the different nutrient requirements will be covered to the full extent. The following tables and figures inform on the most important crude nutrients and on the energy levels of the diets. In the descriptions below, the energy contents are given as DE (Digestible as well as R (Metabolizable Rind [cattle], because at present the WRSA (World Rabbit Science Association do not accept any formula for the estimation of the energy content of rabbit (guinea pig diets, but rather suggests to perform animal experiments to determine the energy density of a certain feed. However, with both energy values the DE and R the actual energy content of the diets and the gradation of the energy levels may be described sufficiently. However, under certain keeping or experimental conditions or in animals showing a tendency to obesity it may be useful or necessary to restrict the daily feed allowance, i.e. the amount of feed offered to the animal, or to switch to a diet with a lower energy density and vice versa for animals showing a tendency to cachexia (as a result of high breeding performance, stress, disease etc.. * Further special diets on request
