The Power of Enzymes Without enzymes you could not exist. Enzymes trigger thousands of call to actions in the body that are necessary for you to survive. The Role of Enzymes If your body was a factory, and in many ways it is, your enzymes would be playing the role of your factory workers. There are different types of enzymes at work in your body. This handout provides specific information about your digestive enzymes, those little factory workers that help you to digest your food properly and use it for fuel.
Some say we are born with only so many enzymes to keep our digestive functions healthy and that digestive enzymes naturally begin to deplete in our 30's due to aging. Furthermore, when we eat the wrong foods, suffer from ongoing stress or are ill enzymes deplete more quickly. I tend to believe deficiencies are not so much age related as diet and stress related. Chances are if you are over the age of 35, American, stressed out and eating a poor diet, you are already deficient in one or two major digestive enzymes. By reducing stress, eating more live foods, and temporarily taking a dietary enzyme supplement, you can reduce symptoms of not just enzyme deficiency, but food sensitivity as well. What are Live Foods? Live foods are foods that have not been heated, cooked or refined in any way. At least 50% of the foods you eat should be live. Some folks call these foods raw. Meaning they are in their raw form. For example, a raw apple, raw honey, raw fish, raw nuts, raw milk and so on. Live foods contain their own natural enzymes and support your entire system. Live foods tend to lose their enzymes when heated to higher than 113 degrees. So, live foods should be eaten uncooked whenever possible. Otherwise, they become dead foods.
When you eat foods that are no longer live (dead foods) your body is short changed elsewhere, as these little factory workers (enzymes) have to leave their posts from your heart, lungs, muscle tissue, liver tissue and other places in your body in order to assist with digesting the dead food you just ate. This doesn't happen when live foods are eaten. Dead Foods Also Have Value Dead foods are not without value. And, I m not talking about dead animals. I m talking about foods that contain no enzymes. They contain important nutrients too, so don t set about trying to eliminate them from your diet. Eating more dead foods than live will cause too much acid waste in the body is known as acidosis. Acidosis is the number one cause of all disease that is not inherited. Amylase Deficiency Symptoms: Your food cravings consist of carbohydrates, such as pasta, cakes, sweets, coffee, chocolate and breads. Symptoms of deficiency include: PMS Skin Eruptions Low Blood Pressure Sprue (wheat intolerance) Depression Fatigue Neck and Shoulder Aches Hemorrhoids Cold Hands and Feet Stomach Ache Pancreatitis Headaches
Lipase Deficiency Symptoms: Your food cravings consist of fatty foods, creams, smoked or rich tasting foods, ethnic foods and rich desserts. Symptoms of deficiency include: Cystitis Arthritis Infection(s) Bladder Infection Prostate Problems Bypass surgery Gallstones Hepatitis Tumors Psoriasis Cataracts Breast Lumps Gall-bladder Problems Urinary Problems Aching Feet Hay Fever Cirrhosis Hives Protease Deficiency Symptoms: You crave proteins, such as meat, fish, bacon and chicken. Symptoms of deficiency include: Sciatica Herniated Disk Loss of Hearing Yeast Infections Osteoporosis Insomnia Heart Disease High Blood Pressure Back Problems Arteriosclerosis Constipation Ear Infections
Combination Deficiency Symptoms: Cravings include daily, sweets and carbohydrates of all kinds. Symptoms of deficiency include: Colds Diverticulosis Chronic Allergies Milk Intolerance Aching Knees Colitis Irritable Bowel Diarrhea & Constipation (or both) Crohn's Disease Supplementing with Digestive Enzymes Most multiple-enzyme products contain the following necessary ingredients: Protease (digests proteins): Helps with Anxiety, low blood sugar, kidney problems, cancer, bacterial and viral infections, bone problems, water retention, and immunity. Lipase (digests fats): helps with high cholesterol, diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure, Chronic Fatigue, dizziness and Irritable Bowel syndrome. Cellulase (digests fiber): Helps with bloating, gas, food allergies and yeast infections.
Amylase (digests carbohydrates): Helps with liver and gall bladder, herpes and skin problems. Sucrase (digests sugars): Helps with lung (breathing) problems, mood swings, insomnia and depression, dizziness and chronic irritable bowel (with diarrhea). Chewable multi-enzymes, such as Super Papaya Enzyme Plus Supplements by American Health are available if you have just occasional indigestion. It is a light-weight when it comes to digestive supplements, but convenient to travel with. This particular product combines key dietary enzymes along with a bit of peppermint, which is known for its comforting qualities, and that is a big plus when you are on the go. These chewable tablets work instantly to calm your stomach and bowel. Note: If you have a history of irritable bowel syndrome or acid reflux due to a relaxed sphincter muscle (the muscle that closes the opening to the stomach from the esophagus), you'll want to choose a multiple-enzyme capsule that does not contain Peppermint. Peppermint relaxes the muscle between your stomach and throat aggravating acid reflux syndrome. Its main ingredient, menthol, may also cause burning (and white) tongue after continuous use. Peppermint oil capsules are available, which you can use separately for IBS symptoms. They bypass your stomach and are better for long- term use. In rare instances, Peppermint can cause hot flashes, sweating, a burning sensation in your rectum, muscle pain or tremors. This would be considered an allergic reaction or a sensitive reaction from overuse. If you experience any of these reactions to Peppermint, do not use the Peppermint capsules mentioned above.
Digestive Enzyme Supplement Side Affects Studies have not shown any side effects from using enzymes. Multi-enzymes are not toxic, nor do they become so in the body. Simply follow directions on your product label. Lose stool may occur when using a dose higher than needed, in which case, just cut back some and make minor personal adjustments as you see fit. Important Note for Cancer Patients & Those on Medication Proteolytic enzymes in the body break down dietary protein. Proteolytic enzymes are Pancreatin, Papain, Bromelain, Trypsin, Chymotrysin and Rutin. Cancer cells have a protein like coating that proteolytic enzymes can help to destroy. This is the power of enzymes. However, if you are taking blood-thinning medication, have cancer, or are in cancer therapy do not take supplemental Proteolytic enzymes without consulting with your doctor. They have a slight tendency to thin the blood and may interfere with your treatment and ability to heal.
