1 WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO MONITOR YOUR PHOSPHORUS? Healthy kidneys excrete phosphorus from your body. But phosphorus builds up in the blood when kidneys fail, which causes calcium to come out of the bones. This then makes your bones brittle and susceptible to osteoporosis. Additionally, the extra calcium and phosphorus in the blood can build up in blood vessels and your heart, causing them to clog and be damaged. It is very important to limit your phosphorus intake as you wouldn t want other organs to fail as well. If you have any questions or concerns with phosphorus or your diet, please contact your doctor or dietitian. PHOSPHORUS AND DIALYSIS You may also visit

3 WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO MONITOR YOUR POTASSIUM? Healthy kidneys excrete potassium from your blood. When your kidneys fail, dialysis and your diet work together to balance your potassium levels. Potassium helps muscles and nerves work properly. It is important to get the right amount of potassium because if you have too much or too little, your muscles will become weak. It may even effect your heart and breathing. POTASSIUM AND DIALYSIS If you have any questions or concerns with potassium or your diet, please contact your doctor or dietitian. You may also visit

5 WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO MONITOR YOUR SODIUM CONTENT? The primary role of sodium in the body is to maintain normal fluid balance, which is done by the kidneys. Food usually contains more sodium than the body needs, and too much can be harmful for people with chronic kidney disease. Sodium causes fluid to build up in your body and leads to many problems like raising blood pressure, swelling, and putting a strain on your heart and kidneys. SODIUM AND DIALYSIS If you have any questions or concerns with sodium or your diet, please contact your doctor or dietitian. You may also visit
