1 The Dicese f Rckfrd is cmmitted t prviding a learning envirnment that supprts and prmtes wellness, gd nutritin, and an active lifestyle as well as recgnizes the psitive relatinship between gd nutritin, physical activity and the capacity f students t develp and learn. The entire schl envirnment shall be aligned with healthy schl gals t psitively influence students beliefs and habits as well as prmte health and wellness, gd nutritin and regular physical activity. In additin, the schl staff shall be encuraged t mdel healthy eating and physical activity as a valuable part f daily life. Intent The purpse f this Student Wellness Plicy is t ensure a ttal schl envirnment that prmtes and supprts student health and wellness, helps t reduce childhd besity and meets the requirements f the Child Nutritin and WIC Reauthrizatin Act f 2004, including: Ratinale gals fr nutritin educatin, physical activity and ther schl based activities designed t prmte student wellness; nutritin guidelines fr all fds available during the schl day; a plan fr measuring implementatin including designating ne r mre persns charged with peratinal respnsibility; and the invlvement f parents, students, lcal schl fd service prviders, the educatin cmmissin, schl administratrs, and the public in develping this plicy. The link between nutritin and learning is well dcumented. Healthy eating patterns are essential fr students t achieve their full academic ptential, full physical and mental grwth and lifelng health and well-being. Healthy eating is clearly linked t reduced risk f the develpment f many chrnic diseases. Schls and schl cmmunities have a respnsibility t help students acquire the knwledge and skills necessary t establish and maintain lifelng healthy eating patterns. Well-planned and wellimplemented wellness prgrams have been shwn t psitively influence children s health. Schls als have a respnsibility t help students establish and maintain lifelng habits f being physically active. Accrding t the United states Surgen General, regular physical activity is ne f the mst imprtant things peple can d t maintain and imprve their physical health, mental health, and verall well-being. Regular physical activity reduces the risk f premature death in general and f heart disease, high bld pressure, cln cancer, and diabetes. Gals fr Nutritin Educatin Dicese f Rckfrd STUDENT WELLNESS POLICY August, 2017 Students in preschl thrugh grade 12 shall receive sequential and interdisciplinary nutritin educatin. The prgram shall be designed t prvide students with the knwledge and skills necessary t adpt healthy eating behavirs. Special emphasis shuld be placed n nutritin educatin in preschl thrugh the primary grades as eating habits are established at a yung age.
2 The nutritin educatin prgram shall include enjyable interactive activities such as cntests, prmtins, taste testing, field trips, schl gardens, r ther like activities. Schl shall wrk with parents t assist in prviding a healthy diet and daily physical activity fr their children, which may include infrmatin t help incrprate the healthy eating and physical activity. Gals fr Physical Activity Students in preschl thrugh grade 12 shall participate in regularly scheduled frmal and infrmal physical activity prgrams. Special emphasis shuld be placed n prmting an active lifestyle in preschl thrugh the primary grades as health habits are established at a yung age. Reasnable accmmdatins shall be made fr students with disabilities and/r ther limitatins. Elementary schls shall prvide a daily, supervised recess perid fr all students. Students shall be prvided pprtunities fr physical activities thrugh a range f schl prgrams such as intramurals, interschlastic athletics, physical activity clubs r ther similar activities. Gals fr Other Schl-Based Activities Designed t Prmte Student Wellness Cnsistent Schl Activities and Envirnment Healthy Eating It is recmmended that fd prviders share infrmatin abut the nutritinal cntent f schl meals and/r individually sld fds with students, family and schl staff. Schl meals shall be served in clean, safe and pleasant settings with adequate time prvided fr students t eat. All fd service persnnel shall have adequate pre-service training and participate in activities r prgrams that prvide strategies fr prviding tasty, appealing and healthy schl meals; nutritin educatin strategies including crdinatin f classrm and cafeteria activities; and effective prmtinal techniques t encurage healthy eating habits. Students, parents, schl staff and cmmunity members bringing fds and beverages t schl fr parties/celebratins/meetings shall be encuraged t prvide healthful ptins. (Attachment A prvides suggestins.) Schls shall make effrts t prmte nutritius fd and beverage chices cnsistent with the current Dietary Guidelines fr Americans and Fd Guidance System (My Pyramid) such as fruits, vegetables, lw-fat dairy fds and whle grain prducts. All fds and beverages prvided by the schl shall cmply with federal, state, and lcal fd safety and sanitatin regulatins Access t any area invlved in strage, preparatin r service f fd n the schl campus shall be limited t authrized persnnel.
3 Cnsistent Schl Activities and Envirnment Physical Activity Schls are encuraged t limit extended perids f inactivity. When activities such as mandatry testing make it necessary t students t be inactive fr lng perids f time, it is recmmended that schls give students peridic breaks during which they are encuraged t stand and be mderately active. Physical activity facilities and equipment n schl grunds shall be safe. Schls are encuraged t wrk with the cmmunity t create a safe and supprtive envirnment fr students walking r biking t schl Fd r Physical Activity as a Reward r Punishment Schl persnnel shall nt withhld fd r beverages frm students as punishment. Schl persnnel shall nt withhld participatin in recess r physical educatin class as a punishment. Nutritin Guidelines fr all Fds and Beverages Available n Schl Campuses during the Schl Day Fd prviders shall ffer a variety f age-apprpriate, appealing fd and beverage chices and emply fd preparatin, purchasing and meal planning practices cnsistent with current Dietary Guidelines fr Americans (e.g. prvide a variety f fruits and vegetable chices; serve lw-fat and fat-free dairy prducts; ensure that whle grain prducts are served). All fds and beverages sld individually (apart frm the reimbursable schl meal) shall be well-regulated and cnsistent with the nutritinal gals f this plicy. This includes: a la carte fferings in the fd service prgram; fd and beverage chices in vending machines, snack bars, schl stres; and fds and beverages sld as part f schl-spnsred fundraising activities. Every effrt shall be made t prvide nutritius and appealing fds and beverages, such as fruits, vegetables, lw-fat dairy fds and whle grain prducts, wherever and whenever fd is sld r therwise ffered at schl Guidelines fr Schl Meals Schl meals served shall be cnsistent with the recmmendatins f the Dietary Guidelines fr Americans and/r shall meet, at a minimum, the nutritin requirements and regulatins fr the Natinal Schl Lunch Prgram and/r Schl Breakfast Prgram. Measuring Implementatin & Cmmunity Invlvement The dicesan superintendent r designee shall be charged with the peratinal respnsibility fr ensuring that each schl meets the wellness plicy requirements.
4 The principal f each campus shall be respnsible fr implementatin f the Wellness Plicy. Individual schls shall invlve parents, students, representatives f the lcal schl fd authrity, the educatin cmmissin (if applicable), schl administratrs, and the public t implement and cntinue develpment f the Wellness Plicy. Their invlvement shall include review f and listing n the Individual Schl Wellness Checklist. The dicesan superintendent, based upn feedback frm individual schls, may revise the Wellness Plicy as apprpriate. Attachment A Healthful Fd and Beverage Optins fr Schl Functins * At any schl functin (parties, celebratins, meetings, etc.) healthful fd ptins shuld be made available t prmte student, staff and cmmunity wellness. Examples f nutritius fd and beverages that are cnsistent with the Dietary Guidelines fr Americans are listed belw. Raw vegetable sticks/slices with lw-fat dressing r ygurt dip Fresh fruit wedges - cantalupe; hney dew, watermeln, Pineapple, ranges, tangels, etc. Sliced fruit nectarines, peaches kiwi, star fruit, plums, pears, mangs, apples, etc. Fruit salad Cereal and lw-fat milk 100% fruit r vegetable juice Frzen fruit pps with fruit juice r fruit as the first ingredient Dried fruits raisins, cranberries, apples, apricts Single serving applesauce r canned fruit in juice Peanut butter with apple wedges r celery sticks Fruit smthies made with fat-free r lw-fat milk Trail mix (dried fruits and nuts) Dry rasted peanuts, tree nuts and sy nuts (nt ccnut r palm nuts) Lean meats and reduced fat cheese sandwiches (use light r reduced fat maynnaise in chicken/tuna salads
