1 The University of Jordan Faculty: Pharmacy Program: BSc Pharm. Department: Pharmaceutical Sciences Academic Year: 2013/ st semester Course Name: Phytochemistry II ( ) Credit hours 2 Level:4 th year Pre-requisite: PhytoI Coordinator/ Lecturer Prof.FatmaAfifi Mayadah Shahadeh Office phone: Office phone: Course website m.shehadeh/default.aspx fatueafi@ju.edu.jo m.shahadeh@ju.edu.jo Place: Rawhi Lecture Room Office hours: will be posted at the office door Day/Time Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday To be announced to students at the instructor office door Course Description This course is the continuation of Phytochemistry I and aims to provide the students with the current updated information of the biosynthesis, isolation/identification and medicinal applications of the active plant constituents derived from mevalonic acid and phenylpropene. Natural sources and medicinal value of different classes of alkaloids are discussed. Learning Objectives: The aim of the lectures is not to rely just on factual information but to impart an understanding of natural product structures and the way they are put together in living organisms which is the basis of the co-existence and interaction in the nature. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs): Successful completion of the course should lead to the following outcomes:

2 A. Knowledge and Understanding: Student is expected to A1- know the potentially useful medicinal plants of themevalonic acid, phenylpropene and alkaloids biosynthetic pathways A2- know the importance of ethnopharmacology in drug discovery A3- understand the major biosynthesis of secondary metabolites pathways A4- know the Latin and bilingual (English/Arabic) common names of potentially useful medicinal plants A5- know examples of commonly misused natural drugs and their semisynthetic/synthetic derivatives /analogues A6- use different references to collect the necessary information B. Intellectual Analytical and Cognitive Skills: Student is expected to: B1-know and to correlate the mechanisms, concepts and principles of biosynthetic pathways in plants B2- expand the horizon of the organic chemistry B3- apply the fundamental principles of organic chemistry and biochemistry for construction of natural products B4- predict the physico-chemical properties of natural products B5- evaluate the plant/plant, plant/animal and plant/insect interactions based on the secondary plant constituents C. Subject-Specific Skills: Student is expected to C1-understand the importance of ethnobotanical and ethnopharmacological aspects of botanical drugs C2- acquire updated information on old known medicinal plants C3- be acquainted with the reputed actions and uses of herbal ingredients whether or not these have been substantiated by animal and human studies C4-associate the chemical, biological and therapeutic properties of plant constituents' biosynthesized through the discussed pathways C5- Correlate the origin of some important marketed synthetic/semisynthetic drugs to the discussed pathways D. Transferable Key Skills: Students is expected to D1- advice on the appropriate use of medicinal plants as natural remedies D2- advice on the limitations and precautions of commonly used herbal medicines especially by pregnant and lactating mothers D3- advice on the activities and toxicities of important addictive drugs of plant origin
