Cosmetic Surgery Making your feet more beautiful Correction of hammer toes (straightening bent toes) Bunion surgery (repositioning the big toe to eliminate the unsightly bump on the inside of the foot) Foot face lift (a complete foot/toe makeover) Foot narrowing (so wide feet can fit comfortably in more stylish narrow shoes) Toe shortening Toe lengthening Toe tuck (mildly resizing toes) Toe obesity (making "fat" toes thinner and more beautiful) Nail resizing The secret to more beautiful toes is in your hands. Are hammertoes, corns, or toes that are just too long getting you down? How about feeling good about yourself right down to the tips of your toes. This is about you and your toes. Just as important, it s about how you feel about your toes, especially when you prefer wearing sandals, open toed shoes or high heels. Each of your toes is made up of three bones and two joints, except for the big toe, which hhas two bones and one joint. Together, the length of each individual bone contributes to the overall length of each toe. As with your other physical features, your toe length is determined by your genetics and extra long toes can develop into hammertoes with corns and make it difficult to find comfortable or fashionable shoes you can wear without pain. Now the good news: Thanks to a simple procedure, your toes can be dramatically more pleasing to your eyes, DPM, is a boardcertified podiatrist who specializes in the cosmetic and functional correction of long toes, hammertoes and corns. Let's face it, image is important and cosmetic surgery is here to stay. With television shows idolizing young hip plastic surgeons and reality shows chronicling patient experiences, it is clear that people are obsessed with beauty and glamour. Beautification of the feet has arrived and now being beautiful from head to toe has a new meaning! Aesthetic foot surgery can be performed strictly for cosmetic reasons, but the benefit is twofold. Besides an increase in the attractiveness of the foot, function is generally improved and/or restored. Conservative care should be considered, but often is impractical and temporary with aesthetic surgery being the best definitive option. A more innovative and refined approach, using new modifications to time tested procedures coupled with the latest in technology is what sets aesthetic foot surgery apart. 2

Dr. xxx, a board certified podiatrist, takes a conservative approach and examines all surgical and nonsurgical options before recommending any treatment plan. When surgery is your best option, you can rest assured that Dr. xxx will utilize the latest techniques with a cosmetic approach to reduce scarring whenever possible. Dr. xxxx uses the these leading edge edge techniques not only because they reduce pain and scarring but also because they are dramatically easier to undergo, which allows you to get back into your regular shoes much faster. Many patients are able to go back to work and continue their normal activities just a few days after undergoing these advanced techniques. Here are just a few of the surgical procedures that Dr. xxxx performs: Bunions, heel pain, ankle pain, flat feet, hammertoes Cosmetic Surgery "is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve the patient's appearance and self esteem." 3

The AMA supports the following definitions of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery: Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structure of the body in order to improve the patient s appearance and self esteem. Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body, caused by congenital; defects development abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. It is generally performed to improve function, but may also be done to approximate a normal appearance. Cosmetic Surgery: Focused on Enhancing Appearance Am Board of Cosmetic Surgery The procedures, techniques, and principles of cosmetic surgery are entirely focused on enhancing a patient s appearance. Improving aesthetic appeal, symmetry, and proportion are the key goals. Cosmetic surgery can be performed on all areas of the head, neck, and body. Because the treated areas function properly, cosmetic surgery is elective. Cosmetic surgery is practiced by doctors from a variety of medical fields, including plastic surgeons. Plastic Surgery: Focused on Repairing Defects to Reconstruct anormal Function & Appearance Am Board of Cosmetic Surgery Plastic surgery is defined as a surgical specialty Plastic surgery is defined as a surgical specialty dedicated to reconstruction of facial and body defects due to birth disorders, trauma, burns, and disease. Plastic surgery is intended to correct dysfunctional areas of the body and is reconstructive in nature. 4

Cosmetic Procedures are excluded from coverage Cosmetic Procedures: Procedures that correct an anatomical Congenital Anomaly without improving or restoring physiologic function are considered Cosmetic Procedures. The fact that a Covered Person may suffer psychological consequences or socially avoidant behavior as a result of an Injury, Sickness or Congenital Anomaly does not classify surgery or other procedures done to relieve such consequences or behavior as a reconstructive procedure. Procedures To Consider: Aesthetic Toe Shortening Aesthetic Toe Lengthening Aesthetic Toe Debulking "Toe tuck" Aesthetic Hammertoe Correction Aesthetic Fifth Toe Correction Aesthetic Bunion Correction Plantar Fat Pad Augmentation for High Heeled Shoes Botox injections for excessive foot sweating Sclerotherapy for Varicose and Spider veins Cinderella Foot Surgery Trend Promises Happily Ever After for Your Feet "We were mostly doing just toe shortenings in the beginning," g, says xxx, the surgical director at NYC Footcare. Thanks to customer demand, the clinic now has long list of ways to to make your tootsies totes adorable, including nail re sizing, "foot facelifts," "toe tucks," and foot narrowing. But the newest thing is "toebesity" surgery, which involves the slimming down of fat toes through liposuction and surgery. 5

"Your Jimmy Choos, your Christian Louboutins, those sort of shoes, shoes generally not made for the normal foot," he said. "So what ends up happening is if your foot type doesn't match that shoe type often times your foot will take on the shape of that shoe, and that is where the foot deformities occur." Fixing those deformities is what brought Belinda Cozier Fingal to Dr. xxx "There is absolutely no flesh there. It was just bones projecting out," Cozier Fingal said. "I guess from wearing a lot of heels and pointed tip shoes because those were my favorite, pointed tip shoes. Those put a lot of strain on my foot." Dr. xxxx filed down the bones in her toes and rebuilt the fat around them. The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons promotes the highest standards and ethics of foot and ankle surgery. Surgery performed solely for the purpose of improving the appearance or size of the foot or ankle carries risks without medical benefit, and therefore should not be undertaken. The American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society has come out against cosmetic foot surgery, saying it can lead to foot complications including permanent nerve damage, infection, bleeding, scarring, and chronic pain when walking. Surgical procedures of the foot and ankle are generally performed for relief of pain, restoration of function, and reconstruction of deformities. They may have the additional benefit of improved appearance. Surgical procedures performed solely for aesthetic purposes carry the same risks as those performed for medical reasons. Patients considering surgery of the foot or ankle, whether for medical or aesthetic reasons, are advised to consult a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association. Podiatrists performing surgery for medical or aesthetic reasons should have appropriate surgical training, experience, and credentials to properly perform the surgery, manage the post operative care, and treat the possible complications. Podiatrists are uniquely qualified to diagnose and treat the foot, ankle, and related structures based upon their education, training, and experience. 6
