1 West Florida Adult Reconstruction Forum A case based symposium on practical issues for total joint surgeons September 23, South Howard Ave. Tampa, Florida Course Directors: Andrew J. Cooper, MD John E. Kilgore, MD Orthopaedic Associates of West Florida Clearwater, Florida Continuing Medical Education Provider

2 Overview This continuing education activity will be highly interactive in that it is a case-based practical approach to confronting the issues for total joint surgeons. Areas of discussion will cover knee, hip and shoulder total joint arthroplasty, emerging technologies, perioperative patient management, outpatient joint replacements and challenging case presentations. A keynote speaker will discuss issues around payment models in total joint arthroplasty and what to expect in the future. Faculty and participants are invited to bring cases for discussion. Participants are invited to interact with faculty and seek answers that they can implement in their practice settings. Target Audience The intended target audience for this forum is orthopaedic surgeons who have expressed the need for updates in total hip, knee and shoulder procedures in order to stay current practice. Needs Assessment One fourth of all adults in the United States have experienced frequent knee pain and hip pain, most often caused by osteoarthritis, which limits mobility. Baby boomers are seeking to stay active as they age which has increased the demand for surgery. It is anticipated that total hip and knee surgery will increase 673 percent by The young athlete is also experiencing increased pain, fractures and sprains associated with the shoulder. Orthopaedic surgeons must continue to update current practices to meet this ever increasing demand. The presentation of advanced techniques, evidencebased research, new materials, pain management protocols, infection prevention and outcome data on patients who have total joint surgery is essential. In addition, reimbursement has become an issue with bundled payments and other new payment models for total joint procedures. Professional Practice Gaps Current literature, expert faculty and evaluation of previous courses indicate that the orthopaedic surgeon is lacking in knowledge of issues related to reimbursement and legislation related to the practice of medicine. There is a need to review protocols for pain management and infection prevention. The orthopaedic surgeon must continue to review the most current approaches to hip, knee and shoulder surgery, mitigation of risks related to product liability, new algorithms and patient care strategies. Methodology-Format The format for this course is case-based discussion. Each panel member will begin the presentation with a case from which the audience will have opportunity to ask question and interact with the faculty. Each member of the panel will identify key takeaways for each topic. Attendees are invited to bring cases for discussion. Objectives Upon completion of this course, the surgeon should be able to: 1. Discuss issues related to total joint arthroplasty (hip, knee and shoulder) approaches and surgical techniques. 2. Describe protocols for intraoperative management of the patient preoperatively and postoperatively. 3. Critique the challenges with new payment models being implemented in various facilities and how this will impact reimbursement in the future. 4. Describe protocols and treatment options for total joint replacement patients who are experiencing preoperative pain. 5. Identify the why, who and how to of performing outpatient joint surgery. 6. Discuss case presentations related to surgical techniques, challenging situations and practical approaches to total joint procedure problems.
