2 HANDOUT 9.1 Why Be a Cnfident Persn? Children wh have lts f wrries and fears ften find it difficult t stand up fr themselves and they ften get teased. Smetimes they get angry when they are wrried and they are nt nice t thers. Mst peple like it when their friends are cnfident, calm and hnest. It is very difficult t make friends if yu are shy and keep t yurself all the time. Many anxius children find it hard t make friends because they dn t have cnfidence in the way they speak and act in frnt f thers. The best way t develp self-cnfidence is t practice being assertive. It can be very tricky t be assertive if yu dn t knw what t d, but yu can learn hw t be cnfident, calm and hnest, even in really scary situatins. Different ways f cmmunicating There are three different ways f behaving when yu are with thers: 1. Yu may behave like a muse wh tries nt t be nticed. But ther peple like t bss mice arund and try t scare them because a muse is pretty wimpy and desn t stand up fr itself when smene des smething that they dn t like. 2. Yu may behave like a cranky crcdile wh and snaps and yells at ther peple. Mst peple try t avid being with peple wh are cranky because they dn t want t get hurt. When yu try t tell peple things in a cranky way, they may get angry back r laugh at yu fr being s upset. 3. Yu can behave in a cl, calm and cnfident way by standing up fr yurself at the same time as being nice t ther peple. Assertive peple make gd friends and d nt let thers take advantage f them r their friends. Why Peple Get Teased and Bullied Bullies lve pwer; they feel gd when they make ther peple d what they want r when they make ther peple sad r mad. Bullies pick n peple wh lk r act different. They really like peple wh lk like they are expecting smething bad t happen and peple wh dn t stand up fr themselves and just cry r get mad. By speaking and acting in a cnfident way yu can make yurself less f a target fr bullies, and yu will als have a better chance f making and keeping friends.

3 HANDOUT 9.2 Becming Assertive Assertive peple have t remember t keep a lt f different things under cntrl. They knw hw t talk nt nly with their muths but als with their eyes, face and bdy. They als knw hw t behave in a lt f different situatins. Assertive peple lk thers in the EYES, but they dn t stare. They use gd POSTURE, which means they stand up straight. They use a clear VOICE that is nt t lud r sft. What they say, the CONTENT, is plite and pleasant even when they are standing up fr themselves. They keep their FEELINGS calm (r lk calm even if they dn t feel it at the time). They APPEAR t be cnfident and in cntrl. and They BEHAVE apprpriately, like seeking help when they need it and taking risks by saying what they think, feel and want when it is safe t d s. Try this Handut. ; Act ut these fur situatins. (Yu ll need the help f sme ther peple.). Other peple nt in sessin - First act them ut as if yu were a wimpy muse, then try t be a cranky crcdile and finally practice being assertive. Yu can t find the jam in the supermarket that yur mm asked yu t get and yu need t ask fr help. Yu see sme lder kids picking n anther student in the playgrund at lunch. Try t think f sme ther situatins where smetimes peple act passively r aggressively. See if yu can wrk ut hw an assertive persn wuld act. Write yur ideas belw.
