2 Training Objectives At the end of this training, you will be able to: Understand the need for AB354 Identify Tdap over Td Correctly document the California School Immunization Record (CSIR)/Blue Card Correctly document conditional entrants and exemptions for Tdap

5 Why Do We Need Immunizations? Protect children and families Prevent illnesses which can cause death and disability Protect the health of others in the community Good Public Health Practice

6 AB 354 Chapter 434, Statutes of 2010 Two Phases to the Assembly Bill Deletes the 7 th grade hepatitis B requirement, although it is still recommended and required at Kindergarten Requires middle and high school students to be fully immunized i against pertussis (whooping cough) Applies to both private and public schools High schools saffected for the first time

7 Phase I: New Pertussis Immunization Requirement July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012 (1 full year) All students t entering or advancing into 7 th through h 12 th grades are required to show proof of a pertussis (Tdap) booster prior to school entry: No vaccine NO SCHOOL A Td vaccine instead of Tdap NO SCHOOL

8 Phase II: New Pertussis Immunization Requirement July 1, 2012 and ongoing Students entering or advancing into 7 th grade only will be required to have a pertussis (Tdap) booster immunization prior to entry: No vaccine NO SCHOOL A Td vaccine instead of Tdap NO SCHOOL

10 Key Documents and Forms With the implementation of AB354, there will be 3 NEW forms: Tdap (Pertussis Booster) Sticker (PM 286 S) Personal Beliefs Exemption (CDPH 8261) Pertussis (Tdap) Assessment of 7 12 th Grade Students (CDPH 8260)

11 Documenting the Tdap PM 286 In every student cumulative file No specific space to document Tdap

Information for reporting will be sent out to each School District or private school. Districts will inform individual schools on how to report. 24 Strategies Start Now! Don t wait! Start developing your district and school strategies now Notify parents! Use the CDPH letter in enrollment packets and the phone scripts available online. Involve your local PTA: Discuss how they can help you reach parents before the school year ends in June. Use the PTA script available at CC/ script.pdf Communicate with feeder schools to assist them in getting ready
