1 Aurora St. Luke s Medical Center School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography VASCULAR SONOGRAPHY 1 HSC 470 CREDITS: 3 Credits Course Description: This course focuses on the normal gross, relational, cross-sectional and sonographic anatomy of the vascular system to include carotids, lower extremity venous and upper extremity venous. Mechanisms of disease, unique to the vascular system, as well as the relationship between cardiovascular disease and the health of other organ systems will be discussed. Correlation of laboratory findings and etiologies of disease will be covered. Doppler principles and vascular hemodynamics are presented. Various vascular scanning techniques will be discussed. Lectures are correlated with scan lab demonstration and practice for each system. Course Objectives: 1. Describe characteristics, functions and components of blood. 2. Review vascular physics and the hemodynamics of blood flow. 3. Recognize artifacts specific to Doppler Imaging. 4. Recognize normal and abnormal Doppler waveforms for various vessels. 5. Describe the manifestations of venous and arterial disease. 6. Discuss risk factors of arterial and venous disease, and their significance. 7. Differentiate the structure and function of arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules and veins in terms of structure and function. 8. Define the Doppler effect. 9. Investigate the sonographic exams utilized in vascular exams, test results and their significance. 10. Investigate indirect tests that may be used to assess cerebrovascular disease. 11. Review the manifestations of a Cerebral Vascular Accident Page 1
2 12. Describe secondary vascular signs of brain death 13. Discuss the significance of accurate velocity estimations of the carotid system and clinical implications of abnormal findings 14 Describe the risk factors associated with DVT. 15. Investigate various testing methods (other than ultrasound imaging) used to assess the venous system. 16. Consider the importance of early diagnosis of DVT and treatment options. 17. Compare the causes of DVT in the upper and lower extremity. Note: See individual lesson plans for individual course objectives. Required Textbooks: 1. Vascular Technology, 3 rd Edition, Rumwell and McPharlin 2. Understanding Ultrasound Physics, 3 rd Edition, Edelman 3. Introduction to Vascular Ultrasonography, 5 th Edition Zwiebel Evaluation System: Program Standard The student must achieve a minimum of 85% (C) average in all academic and clinical courses in order to earn course credits and remain in good standing. Failure to achieve the school standard of 85% will lead to disciplinary action, which may include termination from the program. All grades are determined as a numeric value and transferred to a letter grade. The numeric, letter and descriptive relationships are as follows: Numeric Letter Point Clinical Performance A 4.0 Significant Strength B 3.0 Proficient C 2.0 Competent Below 85 U <2.0 Needs Development The Academic will be determined each semester using the following table and percentages. All quizzes and assignments are averaged as one test grade for each course. One (1) academic credit is equal to a minimum of 25 lecture hours and independent study. Page 2

It is the responsibility of the student to make up work and examinations when returning from an excused absence or illness. 5. Class participation is mandatory. Each academic credit is equivalent to a minimum of 16 hours of classroom instruction to include 2 hours of homework per lecture. Page 4
