MEDICAL UNIVERSITY, CHENNAI REGULATIONS OF THE UNIVERSITY FELLOWSHIP IN FITNESS MEDICINE AND LIFESTYLE DISEASES MANAGEMENT (2 Years) In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 44 of the Tami lnadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai Act 1987 (Tamil Nadu Act 37 of 1987) the Standing Academic Board of the Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R.Medical University,Chennai hereby makes the following regulations. 1. SHORT TITLE AND COMMENCEMENT : These regulations shall be called as THE REGULATIONS FOR THE Fellowship in Fitness Medicin and Lifestyle Diseases Management of the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R.Medical University, Chennai. This shall come into force from the Academic Year These regulations framed are subject to modifications by the Standing Academic Board from time to time. 2. OBJECTIVES: India is the world s diabetic capital. By the year 2020, 50 % of the world population suffering from Diabetes and 60% sufferers of cardiovascular diseases would be Indians. It is demoralizing to see the statistics predicted by the WHO. We are one of the very few countries in the world with myocardial infarction within the age of 30years. The Non Communicable Diseases, NCDs. are the deadliest Nuke ever, Made in India,Delivered in India, mercilessly dropped by India on its own soil with the usual pride of ignorance, indifference and incapacity to contain NCDs. The statistics are alarming and the consequences would be devastating. The agony and anguish of an avoidable tragedy of just not mere morbidity but premature mortality through the NCDs which arrive in different parts of the country marching menacingly towards its victims, invited only by the victims themselves through their lifestyle behaviors. The NCDs are preventable, within the human capacities to transform lifestyles to increase the quantity and quality of life. This would be the first course of its kind in the country addressing Fitness and Lifestyle Management. Under the life threatening circumstances it is essential to embark on a specialty as Fitness Medicine and give its due credibility and authenticity it deserves. The Intensity, Duration, Frequency, Recovery, Progression, Adaptation and Reversibility of an exercise prescription to keep the healthy population healthy, and minimize the effect of chronic diseases would be the main goal. It is important and Interesting to note that the American College of Sports Medicine does not mention a word of Sports injuries. Fitness Medicine would be a new terminology coined by Dr Kannan Pugazhendi introduced for the first time in the world by The Tamil Nadu MGR Medical University for this course Fitness Medicine Exercise Rehabilitation. It s a common misconception that Sports Medicine deals with Sports Injuries and caters to the need of the Sports men and women only, as sports is covered by the TV and print media extensively it seems to steal the show. The most important and larger part of Sports Medicine deals with the exercise prescription keeping the healthy population fit and healthy. Fitness Medicine would be the most important aspect of prevention of Non Communicable Diseases, NCDs, or Diseases of Inactivity. This new terminology is coined to remove any doubts and misconception allowing the Sports Physician to deal with the Sports Injuries and Sports Rehabilitation only fulfilling the need of the Sportsmen and Women, while Fitness Medicine Physician would deal with Exercise prescription for the Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases and

2 improving the health and longevity of the general population. This course is the actual need of the hour as India confront impending holocaust of NCDs. Sports Medicine deals with people who make it happen in Sports. Fitness Medicine deals with who watch it happen.when the experts pass this fellowship and serve the community others may wonder what happened. 3. REGISTRATION: A candidate admitted into the Fellowship Courses in any of the affiliated Institutions of this University, shall register his / her name with this University by submitting the prescribed application form for registration duly filled in along with the prescribed fee and declaration in the format to the Controller of Examinations of this University through the affiliated institutions., The candidate's name must be registered in the University within 3 Months from the date of his / her admission. The application should have the date of admission of the course. 4. ELIGIBILITY: The Candidates who have passed MBBS Degree Course recognized by the Medical Council of India are eligible to join this Fellowship in Fitness Medicine and Lifestyle Diseases Management. 5. AGE LIMIT: No upper age limit for Admission into Lifestyle Diseases Management. Fellowship in Fitness Medicine and 6. ELIGIBILITY CERTIFICATE: Candidates who have passed any qualifying examination as stated in Regulation No. 4 above other than the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai shall obtain an Eligibility Certificate from this University by remitting the prescribed fees along with the application form and required documents before seeking admission to any one of the affiliated institutions. DURATION OF THE COURSE : The Duration of Fellowship in Fitness Medicine and Lifestyle Diseases Management course is TWO YEAR.. 8 COMMENCEMENT OF THE COURSE: The course shall commence from 1 st September of the academic year. Cut off date for Admission is 30 th September every year. 9. SELECTION OF CANDIDATES: The candidates for the Fellowship in Fitness Medicine and Lifestyle Diseases Management can be selected by the centres on their own and the

3 selection has to be transparent. After the selection of the candidates, the selected candidates list should be intimated to the University. 10. MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION: English shall be the Medium of Instruction for all the Subjects of study and for examinations for the Fellowship in Fitness Medicine and Lifestyle Diseases Management 11. CURRICULUM: The Regulations, Guidelines, Curriculum and the syllabus for the course prescribed in these regulations are subject to modifications by the Standing Academic Board from time to time. 12. CUT-OFF DATE OF THE COURSE: i) 30 th September of the year concerned ii) The candidates admitted upto 30 th September of the Academic Year shall be registered to take up the examination during October at the end of Second Year iii) No examination at the end of First year. 13. COMMENCEMENT OF THE EXAMINATION: 15 th October / 15 April If the date of commencement of Examination falls on Saturdays, Sundays or declared Public Holidays, the examination shall begin on the next working day. 14. WORKING DAYS IN AN ACADEMIC YEAR. : The academic year shall consist of not less than 270 working days. 15. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO EXAMINATIONS: No candidate shall be permitted to appear for the Examination unless he/she put in 90% attendance during his/her period of study and training in the affiliated institution recognized by this University and produces the necessary certificate of study, attendance and progress from the Head of the Institution by maintaining log book. 16. CONDONATION OF BREAK OF STUDY: The Break of Study for a period of less than 90 days can be condoned by the Head of the Department and the Break of Study for a period of more than 90 days and less than one year has to be condoned by the University authorities. 4 1. The course shall be completed within the period of Double the Duration from the date of admission. 2. The regulations for Re-admission are as per the University 's Common Regulation for Re-admission. 18. MIGRATION / TRANSFER OF CANDIDATES: Migration / Transfer of candidates from one recognized college to another recognized college of this University or from another University shall not be granted. 19. MAINTAINENCE OF LOG BOOK: The candidate shall maintain a record of skills he has acquired during the one year training period certified by the various Heads of Departments he has undergone training. The Head of the Department shall scrutinize the Log Book once in every three months. 1. At the end of the course, the candidate should summaries the contents and get the Log Book certified by the Head of the Department. The Log Book should be submitted at the time of practical examination for the scrutiny of the Board of Examiners. 20. QUESTION PAPER PATTERN: Theory : 2 Essay 20 x 2 = Short Notes 10 x 6 = STIPEND: The University will not give any stipend to the candidates admitted for the course and the University will not interfere, if the private institutions are willing to give stipend to the candidates admitted under them. 22. REVALUATION / RETOTALLING OF ANSWER PAPERS: Revaluation / Retotalling of answer paper is not permitted. 23. SCHEME OF EXAMINATION: No Examinations at the end of First Year
