4 After Surgery *** All instructins & prtcls can be fund n my website *** Pst-perative Appintment If yu have nt already made ne, call my ffice t schedule yur first appintment 1-2 weeks after surgery Pain Cntrl Pain medicatin will be called in at yur pre-perative appintment r given upn hspital discharge Narctics are used as needed Anti-inflammatries shuld be started directly after surgery, must be taken regularly, and must cntinue fr tw weeks after surgery Fr medicatin refills r changes, Fr refills f medicatins, call yur pharmacy r my ffice during ffice hurs Fr changes t medicatins, call my ffice during ffice hurs On-call physicians can NOT prescribe fr patients they have nt seen Ice the hip 20 minutes per hur fr the first 72 hurs while awake Be very careful when applying cld directly t the skin in limiting hw much time it is used t avid cld burns If a cld therapy unit has been supplied, it is fr hme use. It will nt be placed n yu at the time f surgery. If there are any prblems r questins with the unit, please cntact Pacific Medical, Inc. After the first 72 hurs, ice the hip at least 3 times a day and especially after physical therapy sessins It will wrk thrugh the dressings Swelling & Tingling It is nrmal t have sme mild swelling, tingling, r numbness after surgery. If it becmes prgressively wrse r painful, please cntact the ffice r g t the emergency department. Dressings Dressings can be taken ff 7-14 days after surgery; the incisin can be left pen t air r replaced with a dry gauze dressing The incisins will have small pieces f tape ver them called steri-strips. D nt remve the steri-strips cvering the small incisins The steri-strips fall ff after ne week r can be remved furteen days after surgery There may be drainage fr the first hurs frm the incisins. This is nrmal Yu may take a shwer immediately but d NOT get the dressings wet D NOT take a bath r swim as the incisins shuld nt be saked in water Keep the incisins clean and dry fr the first 14 days 4 Rev. 7-13

5 Physical Therapy Physical therapy usually begins immediately after surgery If yu have nt already been given an appintment fr physical therapy after surgery, please cntact my ffice fr a referral My ffice will supply yu with a prescriptin fr yur therapist My physical therapy prtcl can be dwnladed frm my website If yu see a therapist besides Results Physical Therapy, please btain my written prtcl fr yur therapist Please adhere t strict psterir hip precautins fr 6-12 weeks fllwing surgery. A hip abductin pillw may be used fr 1-3 days fllwing surgery while in the hspital. Anticagulatin: Bld Clt and Pulmnary Emblism Preventin In the hspital, yu will have SCD's n yur leg t aid in bld flw. In the hspital and at hme, yu shuld walk as much as pssible t prevent bld clts frm frming. Based n yur medical cnditin and the prcedure perfrmed, yu may receive either aspirin, lvenx, r cumadin fr 10 t 35 days t prevent bld clts. Please take these as instructed t lwer yur risk f bld clts. This may invlve bld draws t mnitr bld levels. What t Expect Ttal Hip Arthrplasty (THA) Please adhere t strict psterir hip precautins fr 6-12 weeks fllwing surgery. A hip abductin pillw may be used fr 1-3 days fllwing surgery while in the hspital. Physical Therapy starts immdediately after surgery. Yu can walk and put full weight n the leg as tlerated. Yu will likely use a walker r crutches fr first 2-6 weeks Use f a cane r ther assistive device fr 2 t 12 weeks pstperatively Start light exercises 6-12 weeks pstperatively: swimming, cycling, etc Activities as tlerated at 3 mnths Gd recvery at 3-6 mnths. Full recvery may take 1 year Lifetime Infectin Preventin Prir t any dental prcedure, surgery, r ther invasive prcedure such as endscpy/clnscpy, the American Academy f Orthpaedic Surgery reccmends that yu take 2 grams f Keflex r 600 mg f Clindamycin 1 hur prir t the prcedure.
