Professionalism GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students learn the fundamentals of Tai Chi, a moving meditation that harmonizes the body and mind. Tai Chi also is an excellent way to become aware of one s own qi, the basis of Chinese medicine. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the successful students will be able to: Perform the 24 Posture Simplified Yang Style Tai Chi Form, the most common form of T'ai Chi practiced worldwide. Cultivate their own Qi to promote their own health and longevity. Cultivate their own Qi to increase their sensitivity to a patients Qi. Improve their body mechanics to reduce their risk of injury. Improve their balance to reduce their risk of falls. Recommend the practice of T'ai Chi to their patients from a position of authority and experience. Teach movements to their patients, so the patient moves their own Qi and blood. Empower their patients to take an active role and a responsibility in their own care. 1

3 EVALUATION OF STUDENT'S ACHIEVEMENT: The course grade will be based upon: The students ability to demonstrate competence in performing the 24 Posture Simplified Yang Style Tai Chi Form. Satisfactory completion of a daily practice log. Quiz in weeks 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, points each. Mid-term - 20 points. Final - 20 points. The grade for this course is either satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U). Missed Assessment(s): The College of Professional Studies' policy regarding make-up final examinations, as published in the most recent National University of Health Sciences Bulletin, will be followed. Please note: according to National University of Health Sciences Bulletin : Missed final examinations may be made up if an excused absence has been granted by the appropriate dean. The make-up examination will be scheduled by the faculty member within two weeks of the missed final examination but never later than the first day of class of the following trimester. If examinees are not present at the scheduled make-up exam time, they will receive the grade of U for the course or lab unless the grade of I is reissued. Enrollment in any new courses will not be continued if students have not converted the grade of I to a regular passing grade by the first calendar day of the second calendar week of the next trimester of attendance. The removal of the I must be accomplished within the maximum of one calendar year. Otherwise, the I becomes an U automatically. Review of Grades and Assessments: Each student has 10 calendar days from the date that a test or course grade is made available to review the grade. Failure to discuss the grade or make an appointment to discuss the grade within that allotted time frame will result in forfeiture of the right to question the grade. 4 PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY: The College of Professional Studies' policy on code of conduct, as published in the most recent National University of Health Science's Student Handbook, will be followed. ATTENDANCE POLICY: The student is allowed to miss ONE class session (combined Lecture and Lab) per trimester without reason or make-up. In no instance will more than three absences (one allowed and two excused) be allowed per trimester. [Note: For students enrolled in Tai Chi II only, in no instance will more than one absence be allowed per trimester.] The College of Professional Studies policy on attendance, as published in the most recent National University of Health Sciences Bulletin , p. 59, will be followed. Please note: o Lecture attendance requirements are determined by the course instructor. o The student is allowed to miss one laboratory or prelab session per trimester without reason or make-up, unless otherwise noted in the laboratory syllabus as being more stringent. o Any absence beyond the number allowed results in a grade of F unless the student qualifies for an excused absence. The student must meet one of the requirements of the o grade of I to qualify. In no instance will more than three absences (one allowed and two excused) be allowed in any group or laboratory per trimester. o The appropriate dean is responsible for determining whether or not lecture, laboratory or group absences are excused via the requirements noted within the description of the grade of I.
