2 WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS? Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease which affects the central nervous system. This is characterised by an autoimmune reaction against the myelin sheath, which disrupts the protection system insulating the nerve fibers. One important function of the myelin sheath is to increase the speed of the information. MS evolves through acute relapses leading to a functional impairment. This disease never resolves completely during the recovery phase. The worsering of the handicap is proportional to the development of new inflammation plaques in the brain or spinal cord. Symptoms The symptoms of MS are: Limb numbness or weakness A decline of fine motor movements Cramps and spasms Loss of vision, most of the time monocular Diplopia (double vision) Sensations such as tingling, "pins and needles"

3 REHABILITATION BY THE PHYSIOTHERAPIST Our approach to physical therapy is mainly functional. Based on the potential recovery of the movement, the physiotherapist helps to: Preserve joint mobility Maintain the driving answer Improve coordination and posture Improve trunk sensitivity and gait REHABILITATION BY THE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST The occupational therapy is individualized and helps to: Preserve maximum independence for personal hygiene and dressing Train the transfers especially from the sitting position Improve the alteration of deep or superficial sensitivity such as the pins and needles sensation Gain a better coordination for the voluntary movements: fine movements, bimanual coordination, strength and endurance Train the writing to improve dysmetria Adapt the home environement to improve the life quality Help to manage exhaustion

4 NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL REHABILITATION Neuropsychology makes use of preserved abilities in order to rehabilitate and/or compensate for impaired cognitive skills. Neuropsychological therapy mainly focuses on improving: Memory skills Executive functions (i.e. multitasking, planning daily tasks...) Attentional disorders (i.e. speed of information processing) Several approaches are used such as: Games focused on cognitive skills Specific computer software tools (Rehacom, igerip, Cogniplus ) Paper-and-pencil exercises SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY Speech and language therapy is mainly based on the improvement of speech, voice and swallowing disorders. Several activities are used such as: Articulation exercises Oral motor exercises Vocal exercises Therapeutic meals (food texture adaptation, learning techniques for protecting the airway...) Speech and language therapist can also use alternative communication devices to help people to interact and helps in rehabilitation of facial palsy.
