Cracks and other types of material separations in the pipe wall can have serious effects on the integrity of a pipeline. Cracks and crack-like features can appear during manufacturing of the pipe, construction of the pipeline or during its operational life. Irrespective of its origin, it is of great importance to detect and locate a crack before it can grow into a material-specific critical size, which will cause the pipeline to fail. 02
3 Creating Inspection Intelligence the power of NDT Global engineering Different types of cracks can be detected, such as fatigue cracks, which are due to an applied cyclic loading, or stress corrosion cracking (SCC) caused by a corrosive environment, critical stress and susceptible material. Our engineering department is a pioneer in the development of ultrasonic inspection tools and has gained an excellent reputation for solving complex tasks such as dual and multidiameter, deep water and bi-directional inspections. 4 State-of-the-art crack inspection Pipe Wall, e.g. Steel Coupling Medium, e.g. Oil Evo Series UC 1.0 and LineExplorer UC high-tech for your pipeline Evo Series UC 1.0 and LineExplorer UC tools utilize state-of-theart ultrasonic technology applied within our in-house designed and patented sensor carriers. This allows us to successfully work within the entire range of wall thickness. The standard configuration of the Evo Series UC 1.0 and LineExplorer UC tools is primarily designed for cracks in an axial direction (along the pipe axis). These are generally the most critical cracks, as they are oriented perpendicular to the usually dominant (hoop) stress. A special configuration of the tool, Evo Series UCc 1.0 and LineExplorer UCc, is also available for the detection and sizing of cracks orientated around the circumference of the pipe. Typical examples of such cracks occur in the girth weld zone (heat-affected zone). 5 External Crack Wall Thickness Internal Crack t 2 t 1 Stand-off How does ultrasonic pipeline crack inspection work? Evo Series 1.0 and LineExplorer by NDT Global offer: Evo Series UC 1.0 and LineExplorer UC tools for ultrasonic crack detection contain UT sensors which are oriented at a predetermined angle to the pipe wall. Ultrasonic pulses are insonified through the liquid medium into the pipe wall. By refraction a shear wave is obtained in the pipe wall travelling under a 45 zig-zag path. If the acoustic beam encounters an occurrent reflector (internal or external crack) in the material, it will be reflected and returned back to the transducer. The crack can be located based on the time-of-flight of the measured signal. The depth of the crack is then graded depending on the amplitude of the signal. Detection of base and weld anomalies In addition to the SCC and fatigue cracks in the base material of the pipeline, the Evo Series 1.0 and LineExplorer tool range also detects and sizes planar anomalies in the weld and heat-affected zones. Typical detectable anomalies are: weld misalignment lack of fusion lack of penetration undercut caps root and hook cracks Combined metal loss and crack inspection NDT Global offers a special configuration of the Evo Series 1.0 and LineExplorer tools which combines metal loss and axial crack inspection capabilities. The Evo Series UCM 1.0 and LineExplorer UCM tools provide major operational advantages such as single mobilization/demobilization for both inspection methods, a single run for the specified section of a pipe and a combined data analysis. 06
