Ultrasound Scan Department of Radiology Information for Patients i Radiology Leaflet No. 29 University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust
Introduction If you are an outpatient please read your appointment letter carefully to check which hospital you must attend and for directions to the ultrasound department. What is an ultrasound scan? An ultrasound scan is a painless examination of some of the organs, blood vessels, muscles and/or tendons of the body. The ultrasound probe produces high frequency sound waves. Reflections from these sound waves enable images of the internal organs to be seen on a television screen. No ionising radiation is involved and ultrasound has no known harmful effects. How to prepare for the scan You may need to prepare for your examination. You will find instructions in your appointment letter. Please follow these instructions carefully. If you do not follow the instructions, we may not be able to perform your scan. 2
How to prepare for the scan (continued) If you are a person with diabetes please speak to your normal diabetes care provider about the eating and drinking instructions in your appointment letter. You may also call the radiology department on the telephone number in your appointment letter to request an early morning appointment, it may be that we are not aware that you are diabetic. If you are on medication from your doctor please continue to take this as normal. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown. Please bring something to put your belongings in, such as a carrier bag. Who will be doing the examination? A radiologist (a specialised X-ray doctor) or a sonographer (specialised radiographer) will carry out the examination. There may also be a radiology assistant in the room. As we are a teaching hospital a student may also be present. If you wish, you can ask that the student is not present during your examination. University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is an equal opportunities employer and as such employs male and female sonographers. If you request a female sonographer to perform the examination we will try to accommodate this request, but we cannot guarantee this will be possible. 3
What happens during the scan? On arrival at the radiology department you may be asked to change into a hospital gown. You will be taken into the ultrasound room where the scan will be explained. Please ask any questions that you have about the scan. Depending on the type of scan you will be asked to sit or lie down on the ultrasound table. A water-based gel will be placed on your skin and the ultrasound probe will be passed over this area. Female patients who are having a scan of their pelvis may need to have an internal scan as well, which will often provide more detail. If an internal scan is required then it will be explained to you on the day and you will be kept fully informed at all times. How long will it take? The time for a scan will vary for each patient. Most ultrasound scans take up to 15 minutes. A musculoskeletal ultrasound (for muscles and tendons) can take up to 30 minutes. A vascular ultrasound scan (to look at the blood vessels) can take up to 45 minutes. What happens after the examination? The gel will be wiped off and you can get dressed and go home. You may eat and drink normally. 4
How do I get the results? The results will not be given to you immediately. The results will be sent to the GP or consultant who referred you. We will explain how to get your results following your examination. If you are an inpatient, the results will be sent to the ward. Support for people with learning disabilities There is support available in our hospitals for patients with learning disabilities. Please contact the learning disability specialist nursing team on (0116) telling them when the appointment is and what examination has been booked. 6 Additional hospital information How was it for you? If you wish to make any comments or suggestions regarding your visit to the Radiology Department please fill in a suggestion form or speak to a member of staff. Suggestion forms are located in all waiting areas within the department. University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust also has a Patient Information and Liaison Service (PILS), and you are welcome to contact them on: Freephone: pils.complaints.compliments@uhl-tr.nhs.uk We review our information leaflets on a regular basis. If you have any comments about how we can improve these leaflets please speak to a member of staff. Directions and car parking Hospital car parking is available to all hospital patients and visitors. Spaces are limited so please allow plenty of time to find a car parking space. Parking charges are payable, please check tariff boards or the hospital website for full details. As well as the hourly rates there are a range of saver tickets available for patients and prime carers. Dedicated disabled parking bays are also available. Marked disabled bays exist outside of the public car parks for which there is no charge. If you park in the car parks the fee will apply. Drop off bays exist at the main entrances, these bays have a 20 minutes maximum stay. Certain qualifying benefits as notified by the Department of Social Security entitle the patient to free or reduced parking. For more information contact the Cashiers office. Bus services to the hospital Our aim is to ensure that there are car parking spaces available for those who really need to use them. We encourage you to use public transport or walk to the hospital if you are fit and well. 6
Additional hospital information (continued) For information on bus routes and times contact Traveline on Our Hospital Hopper shuttle bus service links our three hospitals with Beaumont Leys Centre, Hamilton Centre, the Railway station and St Nicolas Place (Park and Ride hub). The buses run from 6:30am until 7pm every 30 minutes from Monday to Friday. The nationally recognised concessions are valid on buses in Leicester including the Hospital Hopper. Contact the UHL Travelwise Manager on for more information on the Hospital Hopper. Relatives and escorts You may wish to bring a friend or relative to accompany you to and from the Radiology Department when you have your examination although they may not always be allowed into the examination room. This may be useful if you do not understand English very well or if you have any special needs. Children Baby changing facilities are available. Please ask to be shown to them if you wish to use them. We are unable to offer childcare facilities. If you need to bring your children with you, please bring along an adult who can supervise them whilst your examination is being carried out. Radiology staff are not able to supervise your children. Facilities available Refreshments: Refreshments including hot and cold drinks are available in the hospital. Please ask a member of staff for directions. Shops: Each hospital contains a shop selling magazines, newspapers, sweets and drinks. Please ask a member of staff for directions. 7
