MBTI & Enneagram Stages of Human Development in Relation to Type We have a hierarchy of preferences in the four functions of our Type: DOMINANT AUXILIARY THIRD INFERIOR 2
MBTI & Enneagram Hindrances to Development Given that obstacles to straight-forward personal development exist to some degree for all people, so too ideal Type development will vary according to each individual s lifestory. In fact one would not have to look too far to find examples of stunted Type development. (E.g., an individual who at 70 years of age is still only coming to terms with his or her dominant function). MBTI & Enneagram Hindrances to Development It is important to note that the weaknesses we can so readily identify in others are often a projection of the undeveloped, ignored or even denied aspects of our own Type. We all have all four functions (SNFT) within our personality. We prefer some over others. Those that are not preferred remain undeveloped until circumstances demand it. 3
Typical Stages of Human Development Infancy Development of Extraversion or Introversion Childhood Development of Dominant in the direction of Extraversion or Introversion. Adolescence Development of Auxiliary in opposite direction of Extraversion or Introversion. Early Adult Development of the Third in direction of Dominant. Middlescence Development of Inferior Function in opposite direction of Dominant. Senesence Integration and individuation process may take place. MBTI & Enneagram Stages of Human Development in Relation to Type As an individual develops through successive life stages the auxiliary and third functions are more consciously engaged and become supportive of the integration process. When the inferior function manifests in a person lacking the capacity to draw on the strengths of the dominant, auxiliary and third we observe a degree of dysfunctionality. 4
MBTI & Enneagram Stages of Human Development in Relation to Type As an individual becomes conscious of the manifestations of the inferior function welcoming it with humility and vulnerability placing it before the influence of Divine Grace then one s intentions and behaviours are congruent with the leadings of God s dream and spiritual growth and fruit matures. Type and Finding Your Spiritual Path 5
Type and Finding Your Spiritual Path Type and Following Your Spiritual Path 6
Type and Following Your Spiritual Path Finding your Spiritual Path and Following your Spiritual Path were developed to help individuals and groups use C.G.Jung s observations about psychological type as a way to find their individual and group journeys toward wholeness. The words and phrases are meant to open you to new aspects of this search. If you have comments and suggestions to share with the author, please send them to CAPT P.O. Box 13807, University Station, Gainesville, Fl and they will be forwarded to the Reverend Earle Page. The temptation would be to try to match up the Enneagram spaces with the 16 MBTI Types as if they were simply and mutually interchangeable 7
MBTI & Enneagram A fruitful synthesis of the two systems; Consider one s Enneagram space in the light of the Dominant and Inferior in one s MBTI Type. Recognise the ways in which one s Enneagram compulsion relates to one s less conscious aspects of the MBTI Inferior Function. Recognise the ways in which the Enneagram movement of integration (or redemption against the arrows) relates to the Jungian process of individuation and wholeness in which the awakening functions bring about a greater wholeness, freedom, and capacity for love. 8
