Students will examine how and why people behave the way they do. Exploration of how a person s biological foundation coupled with their behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and social growth unfolds daily and over the life span will be emphasized. In keeping with Clarke University's mission, students will mutually foster personal and intellectual growth by challenging one another to achieve higher levels of awareness and Christian responsibility. Through cultivated thinking skills informed by experience, knowledge, insight, and reflection, as life-long learners, students will be better equipped to go forth and affect our immediate and global surroundings. 4 PSYC 122 Adult Development (Fall 2014, 2015, 2016) Description: An examination of physical, cognitive and socioemotional development issues in adulthood from young adulthood to later life, including issues of career, family, aging, retirement and death. PSYC 281 Human Motivation (Spring 2015, 2016) Description: Why do we do what we do? What motivates our behavior? An examination of the many factors that arouse, maintain, and direct human behavior such as hunger, sex, addiction, sleep, aggression, happiness, creativity. PSYC 320 Social Science Research Methods (Fall : hybrid; Fall 2016: standard) Description: A comprehensive examination of experimental designs and techniques used in psychological research. Topics include sampling and generalizability, measurement, reliability, validity and methods of measuring behavior. Students will be expected to use this course as preparation for developing their own research study/experiment, which will occur in PSYC 499 Capstone: Psychology Research PSYC 345 Sensation & Perception (Spring 2016) Description: Sensation and perception is how the human body turns different physical stimuli into neural impulses (sensation), and how the brain receives and interprets these impulses (perception). This course will discuss these processes in a number of modalities, including the visual, auditory, gustatory, olfactory, tactile systems, and how sensory and perceptual processes shape our experience of reality. Psychological principles and theories will be discussed as well as the roles of evolution, development, society, prior knowledge, and inference in our perceptual judgments and our conscious experiences. There is a lab associated with this course in which students will have the opportunity to have hands-on experience with these concepts Enrollment: class size of 14 students PSYC 380: Topics: Psychology of Language (Fall 2016) Description: This course explores the psychological and neurobiological processes involved in language. Topic include language acquisition, comprehension, conversation, reading and writing, and social elements of language. Enrollment: class size of 24 students PSYC 385- Physiological Psychology (Fall 2015) Description: This course will focus on the biological foundations of human behavior. We will explore the nervous system, psychopharmacology, and biological underpinnings of psychological processes like memory, emotion, & psychopathology. Enrollment: class size of 25 students PSYC 471 Cognitive Psychology (Spring 2015) Description: The thinking involved in such activities as language, problem solving, and memory are investigated. 5 PSYC499 Capstone Psychology Researcher (Fall 2014 & Spring 2015,2016: hybrid) Description: This course provides a focal point and closure of the psychology major within the context of a liberal arts education. As a departmental offering this course focuses on individual empirical research on a topic chosen by the student and expands to include breadth and integration of knowledge and synthesis. Approved research plans are supervised by a psychology faculty member and include statistically analyzed results which are reported in a professionally written research paper.
