1 GORDON-CONWELL THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY CO 616 COGNITIVE THERAPY Dr. Pablo Polischuk Fall Semester 2019 Mondays 9:10 AM -12:10 PM I. COURSE OBJECTIVES The objectives of this course are that the students will: 1. Explore major theories in cognitive psychology. Attention to cognitive structures, processes and events will be focused as to develop a comprehensive understanding of the field. 2. Explore ways in which theory is applicable to counseling and clinical practice. Review the models of service delivery based upon cognitive theory that serve as paradigms for intervention in the counseling field. 3. Learn the skills and strategies applicable to the treatment of discrete problems in the domain of psychopathology (e.g., anxiety, depression). 4. Attempt to integrate in a wholesome fashion emotional and spiritual issues, aspects and functioning to the cognitive approaches. II. COURSE FORMAT. The student will participate in an interactive fashion as to allow for the optimization of contingencies leading to learning. 1. The class will meet for three hours weekly. 2. Lectures, discussion and exploration of issues in mutual fashion will focus upon subject matter and its practical application in the field of psychotherapy/ counseling. 2 Specific chapters will be assigned in preparation for the topics listed in the syllabus. These books are foundational and should be read in their entirety. Other sources drawn from the bibliography will complement the course s reading requirements. 2. Attendance and participation Full attendance and participation are expected in the course. 3. Assignments 4. Grading a. Reading: The purpose of the course is to acquire a broad range of knowledge on the subject. Thus, it is expected that the student will read 2000 pages over the course of the semester. The student will submit a list of readings with titles, authors and pages read, following the format provided. It represents 20% of the final grade. Due on May 6, b. Take home exam: A final exam will be administered Objective in nature (T/F; multiple choices; brief answers to conceptual questions). It represents 40% of the final grade. Posted on May 1, to be delivered/posted on May 3, c. Term paper: The paper will deal with aspects of cognitive psychology (such as thinking, reasoning, memory, etc) as they may apply to therapeutic or counseling interventions. A demonstration of theoretical knowledge leading to practical application is desired/ expected. The length will be 10 pp. The format will be double-spaced and APA style. It represents 40% of the final grade. Due: May 6, 2019 The final grade will be computed on the following basis: Term Paper = 40% of 100 pts. Final Exam = 40% of 100 pts. Reading Log = 20% of 100 pts. 3 V. COURSE OUTLINE Session/Topics 1. Introduction: Human knowledge and cognition Cognitive models underlying cognitive therapy The relationship of cognition to emotions and behavior 2. Understanding cognitive processes: Attention, perception, thinking, reasoning and logic; attribution of meaning, judgment, decision-making; memory and learning. Psychopathological anomalies, distortions, and styles of thinking the nature of distorted, negative, intrusive, automatic thoughts. Identifying automatic thoughts. 3. Focusing on cognitive processes at work: Attention, perception, attribution of meaning; attitude formation, beliefs, values. Psychopathological anomalies, distortions and problems of these processes. The development and consolidation of metanarratives underlying emotional problems 4. Cognitive therapy: Structuring the assessment and evaluation session; data gathering and diagnostic impression; planning the intervention; setting goals in treatment. Conceptualization and psychoeducation of a cognitive model/approach guiding the endeavor; the role of home assignments between sessions 5. Identifying automatic thoughts; identifying emotions associated to thoughts. Evaluating and responding to automatic thoughts. 6. Identifying and modifying intermediate and core beliefs. Framing attitudes, core beliefs embedded in metanarratives and life-scripts/lifestyles 7. Cognitive treatment of anxiety disorders (e.g., GAD, phobias, panic disorders, OCD) Desensitization Stress inoculation training 8. Specific cognitive approaches to depressive disorders 9. Metacognitive approaches theory and practice; models and applications Metacognitive strategies and skills in practice 10. Metacognitive treatment of anxiety and depressive states
