7 Involvement in current or recent research projects (selected, large-scale projects only): Empowerment of Mental Illness service users: Lifelong learning, Integration and Action (Acronym EMILIA) funded by the European Commission ( ) Position: Research Lead for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Member of the Project Consortium Management Board The EMILIA project had 54 months duration and explored the use of lifelong learning as a means of achieving improved social inclusion of mental health service users with enduring, long term mental health difficulties. The aim of the study was not per se to improve mental health services but rather to improve the way in which service users can experience greater participation and inclusion either in the delivery of services or in education and training delivery in meaningful ways which result in greater social inclusion, and in paid employment however locally defined. The project had been conducted by a consortium of 17 partners, most of them universities and institutes, in 12 European countries. Total value of the project is 3,999, EURO. Bosnian prenatal stress study: Offspring-expressed effects of maternal exposure to durable stressors during gestation hormonal mediation and its indicators (2007 ongoing) Position: Research Project Author The aim of the study is to explore the existence, mechanisms of onset, appearance, and the extent of childhood-expressed effects of maternal exposure to long-lasting warrelated stressors during gestation. The specific objective of this study is to establish whether certain morphological traits that can be observed in children born to mothers during war reflect a stress-induced change in hormonal status of both mothers and their children. Important matters and learning orientation of users associations in Bosnia and Herzegovina ( ) Position: Co/Investigator (with Prof. Bryan P. McCormick, Temple University, USA) The purpose of this research is to learn about the thoughts and experiences of members of mental health users associations in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). This research is intended to identify the views of users about the important activities, approach to learning, and effectiveness of their associations. This information will be used to better understand the perceived effectiveness of users associations as well as identify both their strengths and weaknesses. The findings of this study will be used to assist the development and effectiveness of users associations in BiH. 7
